Overview
HDR has an opening for a Hydropower Mechanical Engineering Team Lead to join our Northern California team. This role leads the hydropower mechanical engineering practice in Northern California and supports HDR’s national hydropower capabilities and client engagements. Responsibilities
Lead the hydropower mechanical engineering section in Northern California: hire and develop staff, mentor team members, drive business performance, ensure quality control, and support marketing efforts to attract top talent. Lead projects as a Project Manager and/or Technical Lead: oversee production and management, review equipment and design specifications, evaluate bids, perform site inspections, develop mechanical designs, and provide field support during installation, testing, and start-up. Manage section staff and technical services: coordinate services with other power and hydropower teams across NorCal and the broader HDR organization. Engage with hydropower clients: participate in marketing, project delivery, business development, proposals, and interviews. Ensure work is planned, organized, controlled, evaluated, and executed with proactive project management and quality control. Select, train, develop, and manage technical personnel to build a strong, skilled, and diverse team. Foster collaboration and innovation across multidiscipline teams and with HDR’s National Hydropower Practice and Power Sector. Perform other duties as needed to support project goals and HDR business activities. Preferred Qualifications
Prior consulting experience including client relationship building and client management responsibilities. Minimum 7 years of experience in the power industry. Experience with power station systems (e.g., cooling water, lube oil, governor hydraulics, compressed air, HVAC) is a plus. Active engagement in industry associations (ASME, NHA, CEATI, ACEC, etc.). Technical proficiency with large valves, turbines, piping systems, rotating equipment, heavy machinery, and engineering design. Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. Minimum of 7 years of experience. Professional registration, license, or certification may be required based on role. Strong communication and listening skills; ability to handle multiple assignments; good leadership and organizational skills.
