Open Rank; Tenured and Tenure-track position in the Business Ethics and Society Program
The Business Ethics and Society Program (BESP) in the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business (MCOB) seeks an assistant, associate, or full professor from a relevant discipline to advance both the BESP’s goals for prominence as well as the prominence of an academic department, where the relevant discipline is open. The position is open rank and requires a PhD or other terminal degree by the end of the first year if not already earned. The position will be tenure-stream, in collaboration with the appropriate disciplinary department for the candidate’s expertise and scholarship, whether in a business discipline (within MCOB) or in the humanities or social sciences (in another unit at Notre Dame). BESP is an initiative in MCOB that seeks to educate undergraduate students and facilitate interdisciplinary scholarly exchange about a comprehensive understanding of business in a just and humane society, with special attention to normative questions rooted in philosophy and theology. We welcome applicants from any discipline intersecting with business or society in some important way, but presume their ultimate interest in normative questions about business and society, especially in conversation with Catholic social thought. The program currently comprises distinguished faculty from various disciplines, a dedicated undergraduate minor called “Business and the Common Good,” and a growing number of students from a range of business majors. In addition to teaching and research, the successful candidate would also be expected to participate in the BESP community, working with its faculty and students to develop a flourishing educational and social environment. Activities with colleagues might include planning and attending guest lectures and conferences, participating in workshops, and identifying and recruiting visiting faculty. Activities with students might include alumni engagement, mentoring, information sessions and recruiting, and planning and attending various extracurricular activities. Because BESP is not a tenure-granting department, the position would involve a successful application for a tenure or tenure-track appointment in the relevant academic discipline and department. Applications will be reviewed as they arrive, and applicants of interest to BESP faculty will be shared with the relevant department. The application deadline is November 15, 2025. Qualifications Candidates at the entry level must have completed all requirements for a PhD degree (or other terminal degree) or have completed all but dissertation in business, humanities, social sciences, or a closely related field. Candidates at the advanced assistant, associate, or full professor level must have a PhD (or other terminal degree) in business, humanities, social sciences, or a closely related field. Equal Employment Opportunity Statement The University of Notre Dame seeks to attract, develop, and retain the highest quality faculty, staff and administration. The University is an Equal Opportunity Employer, and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin, sex, disability, veteran status, genetic information, or age in employment. Moreover, Notre Dame prohibits discrimination against veterans or disabled qualified individuals, and complies with 41 CFR 60-741.5(a) and 41 CFR 60-300.5(a). We strongly encourage applications from candidates attracted to a university with a Catholic identity. Background Check This appointment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check. Applicants will be asked to identify all felony convictions and/or pending felony charges. Felony convictions do not automatically bar an individual from employment. Each case will be examined separately to determine the appropriateness of employment in the particular position. Failure to be forthcoming or dishonesty with respect to felony disclosures can result in the disqualification of a candidate.
