The Medical Research Specialist for this exciting systems biology research laboratory would perform a multitude of diagnostic and quantitative assays, primarily focused on understanding how viruses cause disease and how resulting immune responses control viral infections in Biosafety Level 2 laboratories (BSL2 and BSL2-enhanced), in adherence with the Standard Operating Protocols (SOPs) in place. This position will work independently with minimal supervision. The Specialist will also be responsible for equipment, shipping, and general laboratory maintenance. It will be necessary to occasionally work odd hours as necessary to conduct pre-scheduled lab work and meet deadlines. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills, as well as the ability to work well independently and as part of a team. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Experience in biological laboratory, handling and testing infectious/biological specimens and in vitro cultivation of tissues/cells Strong communication skills, both written and verbal Experience with microbiology, virology, immunology, and/or molecular biology assays Strong computer skills, including proficiency in document preparation using programs such as MS Excel, MS Word, and MS PowerPoint The candidate should also be able to maintain the laboratory website in collaboration with IT personnel Experience with biological data processing and analysis SPECIAL REQUIRED ABILITY FOR INCUMBENTS WHO HAVE CONTACT OR EXPOSURE TO ANIMALS OR ANIMAL TISSUES:

Ability to complete and pass successfully the required occupational health screening referenced in the University’s Animal Handler Health Surveillance Program on an annual basis. REQUIRED BACKGROUND CHECK, PHYSICAL, AND DRUG SCREENING FOR INCUMBENTS WHO HAVE CONTACT OR EXPOSURE TO ANIMALS OR ANIMAL TISSUES:

Selected candidates must complete and pass a background check and an occupational health screening as a condition of employment. For identified jobs, a drug screening will also be required. The background investigation required occupational health screening, and any required drug screening will be conducted after a conditional employment offer has been extended. Required Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in a biological sciences field 3 years of research experience in microbiology, virology, immunology, molecular biology, and/or related disciplines Preferred Qualifications

Master’s Degree in a biological sciences field with 1-2 years of research experience in microbiology, virology, immunology, molecular biology and/or related disciplines Strong analytical skills using Prism, JMP, or R, and skills of using reference manager such as Zotero, or EndNote Understanding and experience with specialized laboratory equipment, e.g., centrifuge, biosafety cabinet, autoclave, microplate reader, microplate plate washer Experience with interpreting analyzed data Ability to work independently or with team members, and willingness to learn and take direction Compensation Information

This position is classified as "non-exempt, hourly" and is assigned to pay grade 25.
