Summary
The Laboratory Research Technician for the Department of Microbiology and Immunology will primarily be responsible for (1) performing benchtop virology assays (including western blots, flow cytometry, multiplex assays, tissue culture, PCR), (2) maintaining viral stocks (propagation, titering, storage of numerous strains), (3) animal research studies (including mouse maintenance, infecting mice, sample collection, etc.), and (4) ordering supplies and maintaining laboratory receipts and safety paperwork. This work will require teamwork and coordination with other lab members, maintenance of accurate and timely records of experimental procedures and results, and maintenance of supply inventories for the laboratory.
Responsibilities
Perform benchtop virology assays (including western blots, flow cytometry, multiplex assays, tissue culture, PCR).
Maintain viral stocks (propagation, titering, storage of numerous strains).
Conduct animal research studies (including mouse maintenance, infecting mice, sample collection, etc.).
Order supplies and maintain laboratory receipts and safety paperwork.
Work with teammates to coordinate experiments and maintain accurate records; manage supply inventories.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong organizational skills.
Familiarity with the principles of biology (preferably virology).
Proficient in research experiment skills and techniques.
Proficient laboratory record-keeping and maintenance skills.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software applications.
Willingness to work in solo and team environments and multitask during the workday.
Required Education and/or Experience
Bachelor’s Degree
OR One year of related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s Degree in a Biological or Chemical Science.
Experience in rodent handling and tissue processing.
Experience in laboratory techniques such as molecular biology, cloning, cell culture, ELISA and flow cytometry.
Experience in aseptic techniques and culture and maintenance of microbial stocks.
Experience in statistical analysis and/or big data management.
