Junior Substation Protection and Control Engineer
WSP is initiating a search for a Junior Substation Protection and Control Engineer to join our Power & Energy team at our client’s office located in Rochester, NY. The following locations will also be considered: Boston, MA; Kansas City, MO; New York, NY; Salt Lake City, UT; Orlando, FL; and Augusta, ME.
Your Impact The successful candidate will have the following responsibilities:
Assist in preparing and reviewing conceptual design for the high voltage substation protection and control projects
Assist in preparing and reviewing project specifications for substation protection and control equipment procurement, installation, testing and commissioning
Develop protection relay setting calculations and coordination reports
Assist in preparing and reviewing designs for high voltage substation protection and control projects including One-Line, Three-Line, AC/DC Schematics, Wiring Diagrams, etc.
Develop relay setting calculations and coordination reports
Ensure compliance with industry standards and specifications, good engineering practice and constructability
Coordinate/supervise design activities of multi-disciplinary project team members as needed
Provide construction support including resolving site queries, attending site meetings and performing site inspections during the construction phase
Maintain complete project documentation for high voltage substation protection and control design and construction, including as-builts and project closeout information
Maintain good working relationships and fulfill commitments to project team and internal/external groups (procurement, construction, project management, material suppliers, contractors, and others affecting quality, schedule and cost)
Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies
Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs
Who You Are Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized institution
Minimum of 1+ year post-education experience, preferably in high voltage substation protection and control design
Experience with AutoCAD Electrical is an asset
Experience with MathCAD, ASPEN or ETAP software is an asset
Experience with relay setting and coordination is an asset
Experience in the design of wiring schematics is required
Experience with PSCAD or EMTP software is an asset
Knowledge of modern power systems, power system protection and relay technologies
Strong client focus
Knowledge of High Voltage & Utility codes and standards
Proficiency with MS Office and PDF authoring software such as Bluebeam or similar
Effective communication and ability to work with team members not located in the same office (MS Teams, email, or phone)
Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills
Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek
Role may be subject to client-mandated drug/alcohol testing
Position is located at the client office
Preferred Qualifications
Essential Professional Licensure/Certification
Experience in SEL and GE relay programming is desirable

Compensation Expected Salary (all locations): $73,100 - $125,400
