Monroe County Friends of Animals (MCFA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a mission to provide for and continuously improve the health, happiness, and fortunes of the homeless and abandoned cats and dogs in Monroe County. MCFA owns and operates the Eastbourne Animal Center in Madisonville, TN, where we provide sheltering, adoptions, and low-cost veterinary services to the community.
We are seeking a Shelter Veterinarian to join our small but dedicated clinic team. This position is ideal for a veterinarian with high-volume spay/neuter experience who is motivated by mission and impact.
Position Summary Under the direction of the Animal Center Director, the Shelter Veterinarian is responsible for performing spay/neuter surgeries, providing medical care for shelter animals, and offering basic preventive treatments for community pets. The veterinarian must maintain compliance with Tennessee state and federal veterinary regulations.
Essential Job Functions
Perform 30+ spay/neuter surgeries per day (dogs and cats).
Provide medical treatment for ill and injured shelter animals.
Evaluate and correct post-surgical complications.
Provide daily evaluation of animals at the center.
Diagnose and develop treatment plans for sick and injured animals.
Provide pain management, humane euthanasia, and surgical support for injuries.
Supervise and administer vaccines for shelter animals and community-owned pets.
Communicate with staff regarding veterinary-related issues and treatment protocols.
Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an AVMA-accredited Veterinary School of Medicine.
Current Tennessee license to practice veterinary medicine.
DEA license and federal accreditation.
Experience in shelter medicine and/or high-volume spay/neuter preferred.
Physical Demands
Ability to communicate clearly, verbally and in writing.
Physical exertion including walking, standing, bending for long periods.
Ability to lift 50+ lbs.
Exposure to risks such as working with irritant chemicals and sharp instruments.
Use of protective gear including masks, gloves, goggles, and coats.
Compensation & Schedule
Expectation of 30+ spay/neuter surgeries/day.
2–4 days per week, flexible scheduling.
