Parks, Heritage, and Tourism Interpreter II

Job Summary The Parks, Heritage, and Tourism Interpreter II is responsible for developing and conducting engaging interpretive programs that educate and inspire visitors about Arkansas’s natural, cultural, and historical resources. The role plays a key part within state parks, historic sites, and other heritage locations to enhance public outreach, program development, and resource preservation.
Primary Responsibilities
Design, plan, and present educational programs, guided tours, and interactive exhibits focused on Arkansas’s natural and cultural heritage.
Engage visitors of all ages through storytelling, demonstrations, and hands‑on activities, including nature walks, living‑history programs, and water‑based activities such as guided bike and trail walks, bird watching, kayak tours, and nature demonstrations.
Collaborate with educators, community organizations, and park staff to promote heritage tourism, outdoor education, and conservation of natural and cultural resources.
Assist with strategic planning, trail maintenance, and performing park operations duties as necessary.
Serve as park manager on duty in the absence of other personnel and assist the Superintendent as directed, including participating in emergency response situations such as medical, weather, and search‑and‑rescue incidents.
Research, record, and document program data, park history, flora, and fauna; draft reports; write copy for brochures and exhibits; craft structured presentations that create memorable guest experiences.
Knowledge and Skills
Strong verbal and written communication skills for engaging diverse audiences and handling guest inquiries and concerns.
Ability to translate complex historical, environmental, or cultural topics into engaging and accessible content for various age groups.
Knowledge of interpretive methods, heritage tourism, and environmental education principles.
Creativity in program design, storytelling, and interactive learning techniques.
Experience working with diverse audiences, including children, families, school groups, and senior citizens.
Strong problem‑solving skills, attention to detail, and time‑management skills to balance programming, administrative tasks, and visitor interactions.
Minimum Qualifications
At least two years of experience in interpretive programming, environmental education, museums, education, or a related field.
Confidence and competence to work independently in remote outdoor situations leading and guiding guests.
High comfort level with being on and in water and ability to paddle and lead water‑based activities.
Knowledge of Arkansas flora, fauna, outdoor recreation safety standards, and ethics.
Valid driver’s license and ability to traverse rough terrain on foot.
Availability to work varied shifts, including weekends, holidays, and varying weather conditions outdoors.
Completion of the AGFC Boater Education Course, the American Red Cross Wilderness and Remote First Aid course, the ARC CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and the American Canoe Association Introduction to Kayaking.
A criminal background check and a driver’s record check are required.
Licensure and Certifications No required licenses or certifications; applicable training courses are provided through the employer.
