The Park Interpreter is responsible for planning, coordinating, directing, and presenting interpretive and outdoor recreation-focused programs and special events to park visitors, civic groups, schools, and other organizations. Programming includes guided trail walks, demonstrations, talks, and outdoor skills workshops. The goal is to facilitate engaging experiences and guide park guests toward a personal sense of place regarding the cultural, historical, and natural resources of Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park and the surrounding area.

Primary Responsibilities

Design and present educational programs, guided tours, and interactive exhibits focused on Arkansas’s natural and cultural heritage.

Engage visitors of all ages through storytelling, demonstrations, and hands-on activities.

Conduct special events, living history programs, and nature walks to enhance visitor experiences.

Provide exceptional customer service by answering visitor inquiries and offering recommendations.

Collaborate with educators and community organizations to promote heritage tourism and outdoor education.

Assist in historical and environmental research to ensure program accuracy and authenticity.

Work with conservation staff to promote and protect natural and cultural resources.

Participate in historical reenactments, artifact preservation, and environmental stewardship projects.

Maintain interpretive tools, props, and presentation materials.

Keep records of program attendance, visitor feedback, and outreach efforts.

Qualifications and Requirements

At least two years of experience in interpretive programming, museums, education, or a related field. Other job-related education and/or experience may be substituted for all or part of these basic requirements.

Knowledge of Arkansas history and the American Civil War.

Technical and communication skills sufficient to plan and coordinate safe, organized, engaging programs and special events.

Experience with Microsoft Office, photographic equipment, and writing publications is preferred.

Must have or be able to complete the American Red Cross Wilderness and Remote First Aid course and ARC CPR for the Professional Rescuer.

High comfort level with outdoor work and guiding guests; valid driver’s license; ability to traverse rough terrain; ability to work varied shifts including weekends and holidays in varying weather conditions.

Criminal background check and driver’s record check required.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience and technical skill in artifact care, museum records, and archival research.
