THIS IS A LONG-TERM SUB POSITION that is expected to start on 09/02/2025 and end on 04/10/2025. Please note that all substitute teachers are hired as per diem subs, even when placed in long-term assignments. All substitutes begin at the per diem rate of pay. Boston Public Schools seeks an exceptional
English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher
who is highly qualified and knowledgeable to join our community of teachers, learners, and leaders. This is an exciting opportunity for teachers who desire to serve where their efforts matter. In BPS, the teachers and leaders are committed to high expectations for achievement, equal access to instruction, academic proficiency for all students, and closing achievement gaps among subgroups. Reports to: Principal/Head of school
Responsibilities
Provide English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction to Multilingual Learners identified as English Learners.
Collaborate with students’ content teachers to align instruction and support English language development and classroom needs.
Coordinate with instructional leadership, coaches, and administration to support ELL students.
Assist with ACCESS administration and oversee ELL student transition meetings.
Plan and deliver lessons aligned with WIDA Standards for varying levels of English proficiency.
Use culturally relevant instructional practices and integrate technology.
Understand and apply WIDA’s ELD Standards and Can Do Descriptors.
Assist in administering state and local assessments for ELL students.
Participate in professional development to stay current with ELL strategies.

Qualifications - Required
Bachelor's degree
Valid Massachusetts Teaching License in ESL
Fully licensed and “Highly Qualified” per guidelines
Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
Proficiency in spoken and written English
Qualifications - Preferred
Experience in urban settings
Fluency in BPS official languages (Spanish, Cabo Verdean Creole, Haitian Creole, Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, Somali)
Certification in relevant areas (e.g., subject area, Moderate Disabilities, ESL)
