Educational Sign Language Interpreter - Fox Hollow Elementary School Job Summary
Serving as a member of the educational team, support students with hearing loss and staff, which may include hearing and deaf people. Minimize linguistic, cultural, and physical barriers, and facilitate all communication among deaf/hard of hearing (D/HH) students, hearing personnel, and other hearing students in an educational environment through the use of American Sign Language or mode of communication appropriate for the learning level of student(s). Work in tandem with special education and general education teachers to implement and adjust instruction based on the needs of students. Implement differentiated strategies specific to the need of students with hearing loss to support them with: understanding lectures and classroom instruction; reading, writing, and math proficiency; academics and social needs outside of the classroom. Tutor academic classes and lessons as needed. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties outline the fundamental operations of the position. They do not encompass a comprehensive inventory of all obligations. The time allocation percentages are estimates and may change. Ensure deaf/hard of hearing students receive and understand communication presented in all educational settings through the interpreting process. Work collaboratively with general education and/or special education teachers to facilitate signing interpretation and environmental feedback, providing continuity of instruction. Determine the best distance, lighting, and angle for student viewing, consulting with the student and teacher as necessary.
Daily 30% Communicate with all members of the educational team who are directly responsible for the educational program for deaf/hard of hearing students. Provide input about student performance and progress for instructional planning, conferences, and IEP meetings. Participate in IEP meetings and ensure that interpreting is provided by another interpreter if needed.
Daily 20% Assist educational team by monitoring and supporting student behavior in all education settings. Facilitate social interaction with peers and assist students with accessing extracurricular activities through interpreting.
Daily 15% Provide tutoring services to deaf/hard of hearing students by reinforcing concepts taught in the general and special education classrooms. Stay informed of students\' communication profiles and their impact of hearing loss on English language comprehension and interpret/transliterate accordingly.
Daily 15% Plan for upcoming lessons and activities to interpret more efficiently and for academic assistance. Adapt language and materials to meet the needs of Deaf/Hard of Hearing students.
Daily 10% Uphold and enforce State, county, local, and District rules, regulations, and policies.
Daily 5% Perform other duties as assigned or requested.

Criminal background check and fingerprinting required Associate\'s degree Two (2) years of professional work experience in sign language or interpreting relevant to an educational setting CDE Educational Interpreter Authorization Basic knowledge of typical office equipment and Microsoft Office Advanced knowledge of deaf culture and proficiency with American Sign Language and other signing systems Intermediate organization, tutoring, communication, and interpersonal skills Advanced interpreting skills (voice to sign and sign to voice) Ability to maintain confidentiality and work independently or collaboratively Ability to work one-on-one or in small groups with students RID Code of Professional Conduct and Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment Professional Conduct Guidelines awareness Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Light work strength level (lifting or carrying up to 25 pounds) Primarily indoors with moderate noise Work location may change to meet organizational needs Experience working in the public sector and with diverse backgrounds Racially conscious and culturally competent with commitment to continuous improvement Frequent standing and walking; occasional bending, lifting, and climbing Eye-hand coordination, visual concentration, repetitive motions, and ability to focus in noisy environments May be exposed to outdoor weather conditions Desired Qualifications
