The Campus Police Officer is responsible for the safety and security of all University properties, faculty, staff, students, and guests during the assigned tour of duty. Patrol University buildings, grounds, and adjacent public areas to enforce Rhode Island state statutes and Brown University rules and regulations. Maintain responsibility for the post or assignment during the official tour of duty, including preventing and suppressing crime, protecting life and property, apprehending offenders, preserving the peace, and enforcing state statutes and University regulations. Assist with developing and improving mechanisms to build relationships with the department and the community. Maintain licensing requirements and associated immunities to exercise police authority on campus and adjacent lands as provided by Rhode Island law. Maintain proficiency in police equipment and firearms; be capable of using deadly force when appropriate in accordance with state law and Department policy. B. Illustrative Examples of Work
Patrol Brown University buildings and grounds, focusing on high-crime areas; conduct criminal investigations; prepare investigations reports; make arrests and process individuals; testify in court or at University hearings. Respond to emergencies (fires, injuries); assist in training new officers; inspect and maintain equipment; protect lives, safety, and property of students, staff, faculty, and visitors; perform related duties as required. C. Qualifications
Ability to effect arrests with restraints; subdue resisting individuals using approved methods; use hands and feet and department-approved weapons in self-defense. Operate and utilize law enforcement equipment; demonstrate firearm proficiency and other department-approved weapons. Ability to gather information in investigations; interview victims, witnesses, suspects, and confidential informants; prepare investigative reports and related documents; process arrestees including photographs. Exercise independent judgment in determining reasonable suspicion, probable cause, searches, arrests, and use of force. Possess a valid driver's license and be able to operate an enforcement vehicle in various conditions and times of day. Ability to pursue suspects and perform rescue operations; physically demanding tasks including lifting, carrying, and navigating obstacles; crawl in confined spaces; climb and balance in challenging environments. Capable of effective communication over radio; participate in rotating shifts and foot patrols; perform security checks on doors and windows. Perform rescue functions at accidents, emergencies, and disasters; extinguish small fires; arrange for emergency medical aid; evacuate people when needed. Process and transport prisoners and individuals requiring restraints; conduct searches of people, vehicles, buildings, and large outdoor areas. Read and comprehend legal and non-legal documents; present information in court and formal settings; identify evidence and dangerous conditions. Pass a comprehensive background investigation; no felony convictions; pass a psychological test and a physical examination; complete Campus Police Officer training including Use of Force policy; be 21 years of age; be a United States citizen; have a high school diploma (higher education preferred); complete a one-year probationary period. Candidates who are graduates of the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy or another accredited academy (lateral candidates): application review is ongoing; may be invited for an interview. Candidates who are not graduates (entry level): application review is ongoing; physical and written assessments administered by Fit 2 Serve (F2S); visit the F2S website and register for assessments; certification validity: physical test - one year; written test - two years; email certifications to the Brown hiring address if already tested; successful candidates may be invited for an interview within two weeks of assessments.
