Patrol Brown University buildings and grounds according to the assigned tour of duty and designated mode of patrol. Prevent and suppress crime; protect life and property; apprehend and process offenders; preserve the peace and maintain order. Enforce state statutes and University regulations; assist in developing and improving relationships with the department and the community. Provide information and directions to guests and visitors; respond to emergencies (fires, injuries) and participate in training of officers when applicable. Maintain proficiency with police equipment and firearms; exercise independent judgment on reasonable suspicion, probable cause, and use of force according to law and policy. Conduct criminal investigations, prepare reports, testify in court or university hearings, and coordinate with other law enforcement agencies as needed. Inspect and maintain assigned equipment (firearms, clothing) and perform other duties to protect students, staff, faculty, and visitors. Engage in community relations efforts and contribute to the safety and security of University properties and people. Qualifications

Must pass or be a graduate of the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy or another accredited academy, and this Department’s Campus Police Officer training program, including instruction on Use of Force policy. Eligible for licensing as a Special Police Officer by the Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police. Must pass all recruitment training courses (including Emergency Water Safety) if required by RI Municipal Police Training Academy. Pass psychological and physical examinations and a comprehensive background check; must be 21 years of age or older; must be a U.S. citizen. Possess a valid driver’s license and the ability to operate a motor vehicle; no felony convictions. High school diploma or GED (higher education is a plus). Ability to provide high level of customer service and to treat others with dignity and respect in all situations. Willingness to work a rotating schedule (four days on, two days off). Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills; ability to operate law enforcement equipment and to use firearms as approved by the department. Ability to arrest and restrain suspects, conduct interviews, gather information, prepare investigative reports, and testify as needed. Ability to perform physically demanding duties, including pursuing suspects, assisting in rescue operations, and responding to emergencies; capable of handling stress and verbal confrontations. Must be licensed as a Special Police Officer by the Rhode Island State Police. Timeline

Application review is ongoing for both lateral (RI Municipal Police Training Academy graduates) and entry-level candidates. Lateral candidates may be invited for interviews; entry-level candidates may participate in Fit 2 Serve assessments (physical and written). Certifications from Fit 2 Serve are valid for defined timeframes; eligible candidates may be invited for interviews after assessments.
