Staff Accountant – Grants & Contracts Position Overview We are seeking a detail-oriented
Staff Accountant with 2–5+ years of nonprofit grant accounting experience
to join our Finance team. This role is essential in managing grant funding, ensuring compliance with complex grant and contract requirements, and supporting the organization’s mission through accurate financial reporting. The ideal candidate is highly organized, comfortable working in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment, and skilled in fund accounting, budgeting, and compliance monitoring for federal, state, and private grants. Base pay range $62.00/yr - $68.00/yr
Responsibilities
Prepare accurate and timely
grant financial reports and invoices , including all required supporting documentation, in compliance with funder guidelines. Monitor
grant budgets, expenditures, and financial projections , ensuring all activity aligns with grant agreements and federal regulations. Serve as the
primary fiscal contact
for grantors, sub-recipients, and funding partners. Ensure
proper coding and classification
of transactions related to designated and restricted funds. Analyze grant agreements to extract financial reporting requirements, budget constraints, and compliance terms. Meet all financial
reporting and invoicing deadlines
for grants and contracts. Reconcile grant-related general ledger accounts and resolve discrepancies. Assist in developing and reviewing
grant budgets
for proposals and renewals. Prepare year-end audit schedules and documentation related to designated funds and grant activity. Monitor and validate
payroll allocations
to ensure they align with grant terms and avoid over-allocation of staff. Provide regular financial updates and grant-specific reports to key internal stakeholders. Collaborate closely with the
Grant Manager and program staff
to ensure accurate recording and compliance with agreements. Apply indirect cost rates in accordance with funder agreements. Participate in special projects, including seasonal operations (e.g., holiday programs) and other ad hoc finance team tasks. Contribute actively to the success of departmental and organizational
KPIs, strategic initiatives, and SMART goals .
Required Qualifications
2–5+ years of experience in nonprofit grant and fund accounting . Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance preferred . Candidates with 5+ years of relevant experience may be considered without a degree. Strong working knowledge of
nonprofit funding compliance , including government and private grants. Proficiency in Excel
(pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, etc.) and experience using
ERP/general ledger systems . Excellent communication skills—able to clearly explain financial information to both finance and non-finance colleagues. High attention to detail, strong analytical thinking, and a proactive, problem-solving mindset. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and deadlines in a dynamic, mission-driven environment. A collaborative team player with a strong work ethic, flexibility, and alignment with organizational values.
