Overview
Summit Management is looking for a Payroll Accountant to join our team!
The Payroll Accountant will support the Business Office by primarily processing and recording payroll on a semi-monthly basis in addition to assisting with financial operations, reporting, and auditing tasks in a Michigan public school setting. This role provides practical experience in public sector accounting, compliance with the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) guidelines, and school financial reporting.
Responsibilities
Process semi-monthly payroll for all school employees, ensuring accuracy in wages, deductions, and benefits
Reconcile payroll and ensure all processing follows established checklists and timelines
Verify hourly time entry reports for accuracy and collaborate with departments to resolve discrepancies
Work with Accounts Payable to process payroll reimbursement checks to the management company by applicable deadlines
Maintain an accurate payroll system and ensure timely reporting and compliance with all regulations
Calculate and process special payments such as longevity, sick/vacation payouts, and severance, adhering to employee handbook
Perform periodic reconciliations (semi-monthly, monthly, quarterly, and year-end) of payroll and benefits accounts
Provide guidance and training to staff on payroll procedures and policies
Ability to recommend process improvements and internal controls
Assist in fiscal year-end closeout and audit preparation related to payroll
Maintain accurate employee payroll and attendance data
Track all payroll deductions
Ensure compliance with state and federal reporting requirements
Help maintain accurate financial records in accordance with the Michigan Public School Accounting Manual (Bulletin 1022)
Assist in preparing and entering journal entries as well as reconciling general ledger accounts as assigned
Assist with year-end audit preparation and documentation
Conduct research and data analysis as requested by the business office
Maintain organized files, both physical and electronic
Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field preferred
Minimum of three years of payroll, preferably in a school district or public sector environment
Experience with payroll software systems
Knowledge of basic accounting principles and financial reporting. Familiarity with Microsoft Excel and financial software; knowledge of SMART or PowerSchool eFinancePlus is a plus
Excellent attention to detail, accuracy, and problem-solving skills
Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines
Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion
Strong customer service and communication skills to effectively interact with employees and vendors
Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, and regulations related to payroll
