The patrol officer is a member of the Operations Bureau under supervision of the Operations Bureau Captain, the Shift Lieutenant and Shift Sergeant. The duties of a patrol officer are to promote public safety and to enhance the quality of life in our community through innovative policing and community partnerships. The patrol officer must be able to perform these duties with limited immediate supervision while working as a part of a team with other employees and the community. Responsibilities

The patrol officer is required to understand and be able to apply department policies, procedures, and job methods relating to work assignments. The patrol officer must have a working knowledge of federal laws, state statutes and local ordinances. Physical fitness is required to perform the duties of this position. Qualifications
Be a citizen of the United States. Be at least twenty years of age. Have a background that is free of felony or domestic abuse convictions. Possess a valid driver's license at the time of employment. Possess a Bachelor Degree, an Associate Degree, or a minimum of 15 credits from an accredited college or university with the ability to obtain 60 credits within the first 5 years of employment. An Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree is preferred. Have the ability to complete the standardized course to achieve Wisconsin Law Enforcement certification. Location

Written Test: Not required if candidate successfully passed probation at current department. Will be scheduled immediately upon receipt of a qualified application for those required to take. Assessment Center, Panel Interview and Physical Agility: Scheduled upon passing written test, or as soon as possible if exempt from written. Background Investigation: Will begin upon successful completion of Physical Agility. Chief's Interview: Upon passing the Background Investigation. Rest of the process as listed below. Eligibility List and Conditional Offer: Subject to passing the above steps Medical/Psychological Examinations: Following Conditional Offer of Employment Recommendation to Police and Fire Commission Application Details
Application Deadline: December 23, 2025 at midnight Written Test: January 3, 2026 (9 a.m.) and January 6, 2026 (5:00 p.m.) Assessment Center, Panel Interview and Physical Agility: January 14 - January 17, 2026 at 8 a.m. at Oshkosh PD (candidates attend one of these dates) Background Investigations: beginning January 19, 2026 Chief's Interview: Upon passing the Background Investigation (estimated to begin early February 2026) Eligibility List and Conditional Offer: Subject to passing the above steps Medical/Psychological Examinations: Following Conditional Offer of Employment Recruit Academy: Subject to hire as a Police Cadet (Academy Start Dates are TBD at NWTC and March 31, 2026 at FVTC) Recommendation to Police and Fire Commission: Upon graduation from Recruit Academy or beginning March 10, 2026 Applicants who are eliminated from consideration due to failure of the background investigation, psychological examination, or the medical examination/drug screen may be permitted to take the next written examination provided at least 12 months have elapsed since the last examination, or at the discretion of the Chief of Police.
