POSITION: Forestry Technician II LOCATION: Omak/Nespelem, Washington | REPORTS TO: Forest Development Officer | SALARY: $21.82 - $25.30 Closing Date: September 12, 2025 Basic Functions: This is a non-exempt journeyman-level position that performs technical forest management work for the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. This is the second highest grade level in this series; individuals at this level who wish to promote to Forestry Technician III must apply and compete when advertised. An employee at this grade level assists professional foresters, the Supervisory Forestry Technician (or Supervisory Forester), or Forestry Technicians of equal or higher grade by performing a variety of technical forestry tasks requiring basic knowledge of forest biology, related physical sciences, and the practical application of standard forestry methods and techniques. Primary duties include activities related to Forest Development, timber sale layout, sale administration on major timber sales, presales cruising, and forest engineering assignments, fire suppression. The position may be detailed to assist the greenhouse manager in overseeing Cold Storage facilities, tracking inventory of seedlings, monitoring temperatures, and reporting repairs/damages. This class is characterized by a greater degree of responsibility and contract authority than Forestry Technician I. The nature of work is more complex and requires quickly learning and applying forestry methods and techniques. Minimum Qualifications Education and Training: High school diploma or equivalent, with some coursework in mathematics and science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, etc). A strong math and science background is highly recommended. Three (3) seasons of experience and satisfactory performance (documented by performance appraisals) at the Forestry Technician I level (including training completed for an approved Training Plan). Certification of Log Scaling at Advanced level done yearly through BIA Check Scaler & carded/documented. Documentation in the form of a Certification for future Log Scaling roll outs/workshops will be required to verify experience. A Forestry Technician degree or a two-year Natural Resource Management degree from an accredited college or institution, AND one (1) year of satisfactory experience at the Forestry Technician I grade level. Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Familiarity with district forest environments/watersheds and transportation systems. Working knowledge of timber sale contracts, maps, ops plans and their requirements. Working knowledge of the various Forest Development contracts and their requirements. Working knowledge of the CCT\'s 208 Forest Practices/Water Quality Act and its requirements. Knowledge of applicable Tribal and federal regulations as they pertain to forest management activities. Knowledge, Skill and Ability to Log Scale at all mills, recording, managing, processing log scale data in a timely manner for payment. Working knowledge of logging systems, and road layout and construction as they relate to timber sales. Knowledge of tools and equipment specific to forestry operations. Knowledge in the operation of various types of four-wheel drive, UTVs, hitching trailers. Knowledge of all silviculture practices in implementing various prescriptions and site preps as needed. Working knowledge of prescribed fire as a tool for meeting forest management objectives. Knowledge of wildfire suppression techniques, up to what would be expected performing at the Single Resource Boss level. Knowledge of all eight coniferous species growing on the Colville Reservation. Ability to conduct forest surveys, timber cruising, seedlings, insect/disease, vegetation/habitats; perform moderate to heavy physical tasks outdoors in all weather and terrain. Ability to make mathematical computations with speed and accuracy. Ability to keep routine written records relating to contract files (completion reports, payment vouchers, logging progress reports, etc.). Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and apply guidelines to varied and specific situations. Ability to interact with Forest Development Contractors, Timber Sale Purchasers, Logging Contractors, Subcontractors, and their employees professionally regarding contract matters. Ability to work flexible hours and overtime as needed to meet work assignments. Skill in the use of various manual and power tools and equipment used in forestry operations. Working knowledge of various contracts, including precommercial thinning, tree planting, small commercial timber sales, major timber sale contracts, etc. Familiarity and working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, and database software. Note: Pursuant to Tribal Policy, if this position is safety sensitive it is subject to pre-employment drug testing. In addition, this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing.
