Managing Attorney, Workers' Comp Litigation (In-house/Remote)
Location:
Remote, primarily Southern California
Purpose The Managing Attorney oversees operations for the Litigation Management team, working with the director to create, manage and improve operational processes, support budget planning and financial reporting, and lead initiatives to improve efficiency and communication.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Direct the operations of law office personnel and provide litigation and legal services.
Oversee law office operations to ensure efficient in‑house counsel functions.
Contribute to strategic business decisions to achieve company goals.
Ensure client satisfaction by evaluating productivity and quality of service.
Identify work process improvements and implement remediations.
Work with management to meet financial and ROI goals, identify trends, prepare reports, and implement modifications.
Mentor less experienced attorneys, law clerks, paralegals, and assistants.
Handle a reduced caseload of litigated files and ensure files are fully worked and moved to resolution.
Litigate workers’ compensation cases in California before all state and federal courts, administrative boards, and other proceedings.
Represent ICW Group, its related entities and insureds before administrative boards, state and federal courts, Court of Appeal, and the California Supreme Court.
Analyze complex legal and factual issues; conduct extensive, well‑reasoned legal research and develop defense strategies.
Provide strategic legal advice and implementation of clear, cost‑effective plans of action.
Assist in analyzing, reviewing, and disseminating information on new legislation, regulations, and court decisions.
Supervise and evaluate litigation management professionals; mentor, motivate, develop associate attorneys, paralegals, law clerks, hearing representatives, and support staff.
Communicate clear performance expectations and support team goals.
Expand substantive expertise of associates and maintain the overall work cadence.
Act as a resource for team members to answer questions and solve complex problems.
Conduct supervisory responsibilities: interview, hire, train, set performance expectations, conduct reviews, enforce policies, address complaints, and manage staffing.
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
Minimum 8‑10 years of workers’ compensation legal experience.
At least 2 years of supervisory experience with associate attorneys, paralegals, or support staff.
Certifications & Licenses Licensed and in good standing with the State Bar of California with no history of public or private reprisals.
Knowledge & Skills Expert knowledge litigating California workers’ compensation matters with trial experience; deep understanding of administrative rules and statutes; skilled in Excel for financial and performance reports; strong oral and written communication; logical thinking; professional demeanor; ability to present information to clients, management, and juries; independent work under minimal supervision; initiative.
Physical Requirements Standard office environment. Ability to sit, walk, stand, talk, and hear.
Work Environment Main office, home, and court locations with frequent use of a computer, telephone, copier, scanner, and standard office equipment. Requires traveling to various court locations and works at one In‑House Counsel office weekly.
