School Counselor for Grades 10-12
The Northwest School is an independent day and boarding school in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood. We provide an interdisciplinary liberal arts education that nurtures compassionate, globally aware and environmentally conscious individuals.
Position Overview The school counseling team works in close collaboration with the administration and faculty to maintain and improve the overall social-emotional health of the school community. This position supports all students and is the primary contact for students in grades 10 through 12 and our boarding student community. It is a full-time 10.5‑month position.
Essential Duties
Provide a skillful and knowledgeable resource and listener for students in need.
Assess the mental health needs of individual students for referral to professional resources in the community.
Consult with teaching faculty and administration about the emotional and mental health and academic progress of students.
Create and support delivery of culturally responsive wellbeing curricula for students in our boarding program.
Collaborate with the Upper School Administration and Student Success Team to ensure student‑wellbeing on an individual and community level.
Provide in‑service training to faculty on adolescent mental health issues.
Collaborate with grade‑level teams, boarding faculty, Health and Wellness faculty, and Peer Mentoring faculty to develop social‑emotional learning curricula.
Manage school crises related to the emotional health of day and boarding students.
Work with parents/guardians to enhance their understanding of adolescent mental health and recommend services when appropriate.
Uphold legal and ethical obligations and ensure clear procedures for student challenges.
Qualifications
Master’s degree in counseling, school counseling, social work, or related field.
3 years of successful experience working with adolescents ages 12‑18 and their families.
Strong active listening, reflective and crisis intervention skills.
Commitment to confidentiality and professional judgement.
Experience in a school setting is preferred (3+ years).
Commitment to the school’s mission, values and diversity, equity, inclusion, sustainability and global perspective.
Physical Demands
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and stand, sit, and move comfortably throughout classrooms and hallways for extended periods.
Ability to climb stairs, navigate uneven surfaces, and escort students between locations.
Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Evening and weekend work will be required at times.
Compensation The salary range is $75,000 - $90,000 based on education and years of experience. This is an .88 FTE position eligible for benefits.
