The Department of Earth Science at Utah Valley University (UVU) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Geology, beginning August 2026. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. by August 2026 in sedimentary geology or a closely related field. We invite applications from candidates with expertise in any area of sedimentary geology, including, but not limited to, sequence stratigraphy, basin analysis, paleontology, sedimentary geochemistry, or paleoclimatology. We are a multidisciplinary Earth Science department with a strong dedication to empowering students through effective science education and research opportunities in preparation for a wide range of Earth Science career pathways.

Teaching expectations will include lower-division General Education science courses, such as Introduction to Geology, an upper-division Sedimentary Geology course, co-teaching geology field camp, and the potential for another upper division course in the candidate’s area of expertise. The successful candidate will 1) be committed to excellent teaching that is effective at engaging a broad range of student backgrounds, 2) be active in scholarship and interested in involving undergraduate students in the research process, and 3) be committed to providing service aligned with the mission of the University and supporting programs in the Department of Earth Science.

The Department of Earth Science includes 13 full-time faculty with a wide range of expertise and offers bachelor’s degrees in Geography and Environmental Studies, Geology, Earth Science Education, Environmental Science and Management, and a certificate in Geographic Information Systems. The department has excellent facilities that include a 24-workstation GIS laboratory and additional high-powered computer workstations, survey-grade GNSS equipment, several sUAS for low altitude aerial photography and remote-sensing, and geochemical analytical facilities. Our workstations are well equipped with software including ArcGIS Pro, Agisoft Metashape Pro, Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft 365, Trimble Pathfinder and Business Center, and MATLAB. The department has active collaborations with the University of Utah, Brigham Young University, and Utah State University as well as local industry and governmental entities such as Utah’s Department of Natural Resources, the Utah Geological Survey.

UVU is located within the Provo-Orem metropolitan area (Utah Valley) which has one of the fastest growing technology sectors in the nation and is one of the fastest growing communities in the US with a 30.8% growth rate between 2010 and 2022 and a population of nearly 750,000 people. Orem sits at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains and offers truly outstanding recreational opportunities, including world class skiing, hiking, mountain and road biking, and climbing all within a short drive. Salt Lake City is 45 minutes north by high-speed commuter rail and has a major international airport and a vibrant cultural scene including outdoor concert series, professional sports, museums, and more. In addition, Utah boasts five world famous National Parks, several National Monuments, and many State Parks which present opportunities for research partnerships and outdoor enjoyment. In fact, UVU is one of only eight universities in the U.S. that operates a field station within a national park, and the UVU Capitol Reef Field Station offers unique opportunities for engaged learning and research in the heart of the Colorado Plateau.

Responsibilities

Teach introductory and upper-division courses in geology and physical geography, and other courses as assigned. Prepare, plan, teach, and follow an approved course of study with measurable objectives and student outcomes for each course taught.

Maintain student accountability records, attendance, performance, and follow-up. Provide a student-oriented approach to education.

Instruct, manage, and supervise individuals and groups in the classroom by demonstration, discussion, visual aids, and active engagement methods. Incorporate student projects addressing local and regional geography and/or geology issues.

Hold regular office hours and advise students in and out of class. Mentor student research and facilitate student presentation at professional meetings, assist with travel, and accompany students.

Participate in professional service, scholarly activities, and serve on campus committees as deemed appropriate.

Assist department leadership in maintaining and developing an effective geology program and participate in college and university meetings. Participate in outreach and public education activities.

Qualifications Graduation from an accredited institution with a terminal earned degree appropriate to the discipline. ABD accepted.

Knowledge and skill in current instructional theories, strategies, and discipline content. Evidence of potential for scholarly/creative work consistent with a teaching university.

Preferred Qualifications Graduation from an accredited institution with a Ph.D. degree in geology or a closely related field is required.

Demonstrable excellence in teaching preferred.

Experience teaching introductory courses in geology and physical geography preferred.
