Overview
Ophthalmic Technician (Ophthalmology) – Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute, Requisition ID: 119115. This position provides technician/clinical support to physicians by performing patient work-ups and diagnostic testing, supports the Clinic Manager, responds to patient messages, handles Rx refills, forms completion, and assists with prior authorizations from insurance carriers. This role may be suitable for pre-med students seeking clinical experience. No evening or weekend work required. Responsibilities
Record patient history including chief complaint, ocular history, past surgeries, medical conditions, medications, allergies, learning assessment, falls risk, and family history. Check pupil response to light and afferent pupillary defect; measure central visual field with Amsler Grid. Instill eye drops under physician direction; measure and record distance and near visual acuity; measure intraocular pressure with applanation or alternative tonometer methods. Perform Humphrey visual field testing and refer for further testing when appropriate; perform OCTs and IOL Master measurements; perform Pentacam measurements; obtain accurate refractions; test color vision and depth perception. Screen for ocular motility disorders; use slit lamp to examine the eye surface; perform specialized testing (Bright field Acuity Testing, Potential Acuity Meter, pachymetry). Maintain and sterilize instruments; perform basic maintenance of clinical equipment; manage exam room supplies and ensure medication expiration dates are current. Enter data for clinical studies or participate in other clinical research projects; perform ultrasound axial length measurements and adjust units for difficult scans; calculate intraocular lens power as needed. Takes fundus photos as needed; assist with in-office procedures; process refill requests; ensure clinic practice complies with JCAHO regulations. May teach patients to insert/remove contact lenses and proper handling techniques. Nonclinical Responsibilities
Review and respond to in-basket messages; answer patients’ clinical questions; assist with triaging appointment scheduling. Assist with obtaining insurance-required prior authorizations for procedures and medications; track and process forms (e.g., MVA, disability). Maintain general medical knowledge of ocular anatomy and physiology, systemic and ocular diseases and emergencies; maintain COA ophthalmic technician certification. Other duties as assigned. High School Diploma or equivalent One year of experience as an Ophthalmic Technician Must obtain Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) from JCAHPO within 18 months of start date CPR certification required Additional education may substitute for experience per Johns Hopkins equivalency formula Job Details
