Summary:
Under the direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and collaborates with the general education teacher. The teacher monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities, assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP), and supports behavioral interventions as required.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Knowledge of the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) curriculum for the grade/content range, MCPS special education program, IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research-based reading instruction, multicultural education, assessments, and state/federal policies related to special education. Ability to provide instructional support, work well with students with disabilities, teachers, and parents/guardians, adapt instructional programs and materials, excellent communication skills, and apply the six performance standards for MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).
Education, Training, Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in special education from an accredited college or university, fluency in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment. Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years teaching experience at a level appropriate to the assignment (elementary or secondary). Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education. Certification in a content area is desirable.
