GENERAL DESCRIPTION Provides supervision and direct care for youth in a residential correctional facility. Helps youth learn methods to identify and manage stress and trauma and respond in socially appropriate ways. Uses intervention methods for behavioral issues to aid in learning and correcting behavior. Maintains safe environments and employs security measures when youth, staff, or others are in danger. Interacts with youth in ways that maintain structure and reflect understanding of brain development in youth with complex trauma. Maintains healthy relationships and boundaries and recognizes progress and good choices by youth. Work involves facilitating youth rehabilitation, supervising youth, and coaching their development according to individualized treatment plans. Works assigned shift, may be on-call, and may exceed 40 hours per week. Occasional travel may be required. Career Ladder Promotion Opportunity : This position is in the approved TJJD career ladder for Juvenile Correctional Officers. JCOs receive salary adjustments upon meeting eligibility criteria per agency policy. Placement on the ladder is based on experience and education. Progression to the highest pay level depends on experience and performance. Pre-Service Training Academy Requirement : Newly hired JCOs or rehired JCOs separated more than 18 months must attend the pre-service training academy and complete on-the-job training full-time. JCOs returning within 18 months of separation are placed in full-time status on their date of employment. Levels of Work Performed by Career Ladder Level : Juvenile Correctional Officer II : journey-level, moderate complexity under general supervision.
Juvenile Correctional Officer III : journey-level with more complex duties.
Juvenile Correctional Officer IV : senior-level with higher responsibility. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Engages in competency-based training to coach youth under the Texas Model of trauma-informed corrections. Holds youth accountable and uses appropriate intervention. Maintains safety and supports emotional self-regulation. Supports treatment plans and team collaboration. Provides a predictable schedule and adapts as needed while maintaining transparency. Monitors activities and behavior, and ensures engagement in programs. Documents observations and incidents, and maintains records. Provides services to diverse youth with various needs, including those who may be aggressive or emotionally disturbed. Performs searches for contraband and health hazards and maintains security. Transports youth and supervises them during daily activities. Maintains privacy and follows policies regarding youth records. Attends work regularly and may travel up to 25% of the time. Supports the Texas Model values in daily tasks and interactions. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Must be at least 21 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent. Preferred: college degree or coursework; experience supervising or providing rehabilitation/treatment services to youth or adults in a treatment/correctional/residential setting. Note: degrees and hours must be from an accredited institution. Applicants with certain disqualifying criminal history will not be considered; other arrests/convictions may be reviewed case-by-case. Pre-employment conditions include drug test, criminal records check, driving record check, and Fitness-for-Duty assessment. Continued employment requires certification in TJJD’s Use of Force techniques and First Aid/CPR, with loss of certification potentially affecting employment.
