Position Overview

The agent in this position will have educational responsibilities in all phases of livestock production, forage, field crops, and waste management. The successful candidate must be able to conduct educational programs that focus on the profitability and sustainability of North Carolina livestock, utilizing best practices based on research, including the adoption of proven technology, business, and financial practices. The successful candidate will be responsible for applied research development in the program area.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit

North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives our residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension field faculty deliver unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens.

Duties and Responsibilities

Provide leadership in planning, implementing, marketing, and evaluating educational programs and activities with measurable impacts. Be a team player and support the total Extension program. Network with broad audiences, customers, volunteers, Extension Specialists, and the local Extension staff. Actively seek outside resources to enhance the program. Develop and implement innovative strategies for presenting educational programs. Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of an effective livestock educational program to meet the needs of the county. Demonstrate responsibility and self-motivation with outstanding relationship skills and a strong background in livestock production and 4-H youth livestock development. Include responsibilities for forages.

Other Work/Responsibilities

Knowledge of cattle production (beef and dairy) and small livestock operations (backyard poultry, fiber animals, niche meat production) is necessary to meet the county’s diverse livestock educational needs. Collaborate with 4-H staff and volunteers involved with youth livestock programming to create a successful and impactful county-wide effort. Serve on the Haywood County Fair Planning Committee. Coordinate all youth livestock and poultry shows for the annual county fair.

Department Required Skills

Frequent travel within the county and occasional travel outside the county Strong background in livestock production and 4-H youth livestock development.

Minimum Experience/Education

One of the following educational requirements: – A Bachelor’s degree with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 overall or a 3.0 in an agricultural or related field. The minimum GPA requirement will be waived for NCCE Program Associates with a Bachelor’s degree. – A Bachelor’s degree and completion of at least half of coursework in a Master’s degree curriculum with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher in an agricultural or related field, with at least one of the degrees in an agricultural or related field, or – Completion of a Master’s degree with at least one of the degrees in an agricultural or related field.
