Primary Function of Organizational Unit
North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives our residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension field faculty deliver unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens. New Hanover County is located in southeastern North Carolina between the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean. It is the second smallest county in the state but is home to over 238,000 people. Projections predict its population to increase to almost 300,000 by 2040. The City of Wilmington is the county seat and is rich in historical significance and home to many recreational and cultural sites and events. Important contributors to the local economy include the state port, tourism, filmmaking, manufacturing, and financial technology. Position Overview The 4-H Extension Agent is an employee of North Carolina State University and a professional educator. The 4-H Extension Agent has primary responsibility for planning, executing, and evaluating effective and comprehensive 4·H programs that will meet the needs of the county population and supports the mission of the 4-H organization, which is to develop youth and adults working with those youth to realize their full potential, becoming effective contributing citizens through participation in research-based, non-formal, hands-on educational experiences.
The 4-H Extension Agent cooperates with colleagues in the North Carolina Cooperative Extension and county leaders in performing assigned responsibilities. The performance of assigned responsibilities is governed by the philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service.
The individual in the position will provide leadership for the total 4·H program and will be responsible for determining programming needs, planning, marketing, implementing and evaluating programs. This position will also be involved in training 4·H volunteers, supporting 4-H clubs, and providing opportunities for school-based 4-H programs. The individual will be responsible for providing guidance to the program staff and managing programs funded through grants and fees.
Duties and Responsibilities
Serve as manager of the County 4-H Youth Development program.
Maintaining 4-H clubs, 4-H projects, summer day camp programs, school enrichment and youth agricultural programs, and annual county-wide 4-H youth development events.
Develop community relationships, while working closely with Family and Consumer Science, Agriculture Agents, and Administration.
Volunteer development and utilization of an advisory system is essential to success.
Candidate must have the ability to recruit, train and utilize adult, youth, and community volunteers and volunteer leaders.
Promote and encourage participation in county, district, state and national level 4-H programs.
Other Work/Responsibilities Timely response to client requests far specific and technical information regarding youth education and related topics is an expected role. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain and increase personal professional competencies. The candidate must be flexible to allow for changing responsibilities as needed.
In addition, this position will be responsible for supervising the overall 4-H program which includes establishing and maintaining 4-H Grant Funded Programs, recruiting and training present and potential volunteers and staff, manage clubs and special programs, and identifying resources to assist in conducting the 4-H program. District and State level youth and professional development events that require overnight travel. 4-H Agents can expect to work nights and weekends to meet the needs of their communities. There is also extensive work in the summer months for programming. We offer a way for you to manage your schedule to help avoid burnout. Possible fundraising responsibilities as well.
