Staff Accountant Position Function:
The Staff Accountant plays a key role in supporting the financial operations of the district. This position is responsible for performing accounting duties including payment processing, general ledger account reconciliations, and journal entries to ensure compliance with district policies, state regulations, and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). Essential Performance Responsibilities Prepare and post journal entries to maintain accurate financial records Timely review and reconciliation of general ledger/balance sheet accounts Verify requests for changes in banking information for Accounts Payable (AP) vendors Review and process weekly AP payments and reimbursements for vendors and employees Review uncashed checks to minimize AP outstanding register and unclaimed property Process recurring monthly payments Review AP transactions for 1099 MISC and NEC annual IRS reporting submission Manage Construction in Progress (CIP) of capital assets and running and posting depreciation Assist in capital asset audits Assist with other monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes Assist with monitoring bank transactions for overall cash management accuracy Review debt contracts and subscriptions for quarterly upload into district's debt software Assist in preparing annual audit schedules and testing for external auditors Manage payroll bankruptcy notices and insufficient check processes Ensure compliance with district's financial policies and internal controls Respond to inquiries from school staff, vendors, and the community with professionalism and accuracy Participate in process improvements and technology enhancements within the Accounting office Backup other Accounting duties as needed for cross-training Additional Duties:
Assists with additional duties as assigned by Director of Accounting/Controller. Equipment:
This position may require the ability to use SMART boards and iPads in addition to basic office equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners, and fax machine. Must always comply with WPS guidelines for equipment use. Travel:
Limited travel between schools and central offices may be required. Physical And Mental Demands Work in standard office environments Occasional overtime Attendance at required meetings Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Knowledge of accounting principles and possesses critical thinking skills Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, in order to communicate with others inside and outside of the organization for the purpose of giving and obtaining information Ability to communicate effectively with Director of Accounting/Controller when their discretion is needed Ability to perform as an effective team player Ability to plan, organize, make decisions with good judgement and prioritize work to meet daily expectations Exhibit a professional and positive attitude Ability to work independently and exhibit a strong attention to detail Ability to perform a variety of tasks, change assignments on short notice, perform under deadlines, and work in a calm and efficient manner Display a significant degree of professionalism and confidentiality Ability to conform to proper standards of professional dress and appearance Knowledge of company's mission, purpose, goals and the role of every employee in achieving each of them Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; OR 1-2 years of relevant accounting experience. Knowledge of GAAP and basic accounting principles. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and other Office applications. Experience in public sector, governmental, or school district accounting. Familiarity with ERP or financial systems (Oracle, PeopleSoft, or similar). FLSA Status:
