Middle school assistant coaches oversee the growth and development of student athletes by focusing on fundamental skills instruction with an emphasis on whole child development, including expectations for academic and athletic excellence, leadership skills, and positive social relationships. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
General Professional Development and Leadership. The assistant coach keeps abreast of knowledge and techniques by staying current with sport-specific literature and attending clinics and workshops. Responsibility for Rules and Regulations. The assistant coach studies the rules and regulations of the sport and understands the rules of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA), Federal Way Public Schools, and the league. Program Promotion. Promote the sport within the school and encourage student participation. Program Organization. Hold daily practices; absences for illness or emergency require advance clearance by the building athletic director. The head coach is not authorized to excuse an assistant from practice. Standard of Care. Model safety training and demonstrate basic athletic training skills and first aid functions as directed by the head coach. Professionalism. Exercise good judgment, project positive coaching behaviors, and contribute to student athletes' development and school/community contribution. Sportsmanship and Ethics. Model ethical behavior and good citizenship at all times. Administrative Supervision. Responsible for participants from report‑in to departure. Presentation of Rules/Regulations. Reinforce eligibility requirements and district rules as directed by the head coach. Attention to Eligibility Rules. Ensure program participants complete eligibility before practices. Accident/Injury Procedure. Call 911 for serious injuries and submit Accident Report Form within 24 hours; report emergencies to the building athletic director and director of athletics. Meeting Attendance. Attend building, district, and league meetings. Facility and Equipment. Report safety concerns and care for equipment and facilities used in the program. Violations and Ejections Procedure. Report violations/ejections to the head coach and appropriate administrators after contests. Coach Evaluation Process. Attend an evaluation meeting after the season. Assistant Coach as Program Leader. Meet with the head coach before the season to develop goals and a plan for consistent instruction of fundamental skills, systems, and strategies. Financial and Equipment
Program Equipment, Supplies, and Inventory. Responsible for equipment and supplies and for items checked out at the start of the season. Program Purchases. Request essential program needs through the head coach; do not purchase with personal funds. Fundraising Activities. Coordinate fundraising through the head coach with approval from the building athletic director. Other Responsibilities
Performs other related duties as assigned to support student learning objectives. The list is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary. Qualifications
Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent One year of sport-specific playing and/or coaching experience in a secondary or post-secondary athletics program and/or related club coaching experience Proven training and experience in presenting drills, safety factors, and proper application of skills Additional Requirements
Work scheduled hours on a consistent basis Preferred Qualifications
Three or more years of paid middle school and/or post-secondary sport-specific coaching experience and/or related club coaching experience Completion of the National Federation Coaching Fundamentals Course (including passing the test) Condition Of Employment
