ABOUT US The Texas Military Department (TMD) comprises The Adjutant General of Texas, the Texas Army National Guard (TXARNG), the Texas Air National Guard (TXANG), the Texas State Guard (TXSG), and state and federal civilian employees. BRIEF POSITION SUMMARY Performs advanced (senior-level) counseling and psychological work with youth and adults. Provides assistance to teens (aged 15 – 19) and Texas ChalleNGe Academy (TCA) staff with emergent behavioral health or other emotional needs. Involves assessing, counseling, reporting, and providing training related to mental well-being. Reports to the Deputy Director. Works under limited supervision with considerable initiative. 40 hours a week, some weekends/holidays ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Support ongoing mental health of cadets and TCA staff. Conduct behavioral health assessments of applicants to determine program capability. Collaborate with TCA leadership, Cadre, Case Management, and Medical Departments for cadet benefit. Design, develop, implement, and monitor individualized support plans; modify as needed. Refer to and coordinate with other social services, educational, and health agencies to provide advocacy and resources. Conduct behavioral health assessments for cadets and prepare behavior analyses; develop individual behavior plans. Develop and lead individual and group counseling; provide general behavioral health counseling as needed. May mediate restorative justice practices. Coordinate with TCA leadership to support behavioral health awareness and wellness plans. Plan and conduct behavioral health training for staff and cadets; provide staff training on adolescent behavior, mandated reporting, risk identification, conflict resolution, and goal setting. Coordinate with program staff in planning, development, implementation, analysis, and documentation of agency programs. Maintain professional license. May work evenings, weekends, or holidays; may support national emergencies or other missions. Attend work regularly and observe approved work hours; perform other duties as assigned. Attend relevant training to maintain essential functions. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION: Graduation from a nationally accredited master’s or PhD program with major coursework in counseling, psychology, or related field is required. EXPERIENCE: Three years post-graduate experience as a fully licensed counselor with supervision and direct practice in counseling or psychological services. Proficiency with Microsoft Office is required. PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Experience with adolescents and/or at-risk youth; prior experience providing mental health services to adolescents and/or at-risk youth; residential setting experience. REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION/LICENSE: Must possess one of the following licenses prior to hire: LPC, LCSW, LMFT, or PhD. First Aid/CPR certification required or ability to obtain. Valid driver’s license required; if not a Texas resident, obtain Texas license within 30 days; maintain a valid license for continued employment. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Background investigation (CAC or federal check), eligibility to work in the U.S. (E-Verify), sponsorship not required, Selective Service registration for applicable ages. Veterans and military service documentation as applicable. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Knowledge: counseling/psychology, privacy principles, mental health plan development, assessments and treatment, military culture, community resources, applicable laws. Skills: effective communication, Microsoft Office, interviews and assessments, promoting services, networking. Ability: maintain confidentiality, interpret policies, prepare reports, present to groups, coordinate work, build relationships, work in a military environment. PHYSICAL/WORKING CONDITIONS May require evenings/weekends/holidays. Office setting; extensive computer/telephone use. Ability to drive state vehicle. Travel up to 10%. May lift up to 25 pounds.
