Definition

Under general supervision, facilitates communication between hearing and deaf or hard of hearing individuals in an educational setting; performs related duties as required.

Examples Of Work

Interprets for the deaf and hard of hearing in the classroom at both the secondary and elementary levels and in off-site locations such as career centers

Reinforces classroom information for deaf and hard of hearing students in a variety of academic subjects

Interprets for students and staff at worksites and on field trips to allow access to educational content

Interprets for the deaf and hard of hearing at extracurricular activities, organized sports, school meetings, and assemblies

Interprets at disciplinary conferences between administrators and deaf and hard of hearing students, parents, or staff

Interprets at parent/teacher conferences and Individual Education Plan meetings in which one of the participants is deaf or hard of hearing

Promotes language advocacy for the deaf and hard of hearing to ensure that their interpreting needs are met

Serves as an advocate for the deaf and hard of hearing in situations where a staff member may be unaware of the school system's responsibility regarding deaf and hard of hearing students

Interprets video tapes, television transmissions, and films for deaf and hard of hearing students

Reviews and becomes familiar with the subject matter which is covered in the class that the deaf and hard of hearing student attends; learns specialized signs based on curriculum content

Mentors practicum students from Sign Language Interpreter training programs

Drives personal motor vehicle between work assignments during the school day

May accompany professional staff members on visits to homes of students when a parent or staff member is deaf or hard of hearing

May interpret for deaf and hard of hearing participants in after school activities outside of the traditional school day

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a certificate of completion from an accredited Sign Language Interpreter training program.

Possession of a valid driver's license.

Note: Possession of an Associate License of Interpreter for the Hearing Impaired from the Ohio Department of Education must be obtained prior to starting with Columbus City Schools.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Thorough knowledge of American Sign Language; thorough knowledge of Pidgin Signed English; thorough knowledge of Signed English; considerable knowledge of deaf culture; general knowledge of English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; skill in expressive, receptive, and reverse interpreting; skill in reflecting the register (level) of the consumers being served; ability to interpret in a variety of settings and situations; ability to interpret at various sign levels based on the communication level of the deaf or hard of hearing person; ability to discern specific student language abilities; ability to deal effectively and advocate with school officials, teachers, parents, working associates, and the general public, both hearing and deaf or hard of hearing; ability to utilize the language most readily understood by the consumers who are being served; ability to convey messages with the thought and spirit intended by the sender.
