Visiting Assistant Professor of Biology (Cell and Molecular Focus)
Christopher Newport University invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor (VAP) in the Department of Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Science, beginning Spring 2026. This full‑time, non‑tenure track appointment is through Summer 2027, with possibility of continuation.
Purpose of Position We seek a broadly trained biologist with expertise in cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, and/or physiology, and a demonstrated commitment to teaching students from diverse backgrounds. A Ph.D. in Biology, Environmental Science, or a closely related field is required for appointment at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor; ABD candidates may be considered for the rank of Visiting Instructor.
Responsibilities
Teach undergraduate and graduate courses, with a nominal teaching load of 4‑4.
Develop graduate‑level coursework for the Master of Science in Environmental Science program in the candidate’s area of expertise.
Support the dual‑enrollment initiative by preparing high‑school teachers to teach introductory college‑level biology, including developing course materials and providing evening in‑person and asynchronous online instruction.
Contribute to existing foundational and upper‑level undergraduate courses in the department, based on expertise and departmental needs.
Qualifications
Ph.D. in Biology, Environmental Science, or a closely related field (or ABD with Ph.D. at time of appointment).
Broad training in cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, and/or physiology; experience bridging environmental science is especially encouraged.
Demonstrated commitment to teaching students from diverse backgrounds and to fostering an inclusive learning environment.
Excellent communication skills and evidence of teaching effectiveness.
