Responsibilities
Maintain security, accountability, and logs for housing, restraints, and confinement.
Conduct searches, inspections, and contraband investigations in the facility.
Supervise inmate movements, counts, and transportation, ensuring accurate identification.
Control, subdue, and restrain inmates with proper techniques, minimizing pain and injury.
Respond to inmate medical requests, provide first aid, and monitor inmate health.
Inspect locks, bars, gates, and prevent escapes; respond to and report escape attempts promptly.
Break up inmate fights, restrain disorderly individuals, and defend against assault.
Drive vehicles for inmate transport to courts, hospitals, and job sites.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation or equivalent.
Valid Florida driver’s license.
Pass Basic Abilities Test (B.A.T) and Physical Agility Test (P.A.T).
Strong physical stamina, manual dexterity, and color perception.
Good hearing, sight, and speech; ability to defend self and others.
Work Environment The Deputy Sheriff works varied, eight‑hour shifts that include nighttime, weekends, and occasional high‑stress situations during natural disasters and major incidents.
Application Process Complete the Basic Abilities Test, the Physical Agility Test, and attend all required classes to complete the Basic Recruit Corrections Academy and pass the FDLE State of Florida Certification Examination.
