The North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences (NC TraCS) Institute at UNC-Chapel Hill is part of a national consortium to improve biomedical research and engage communities in clinical research efforts. The Center for Clinical and Translational Research (CTRC) provides outpatient clinical services to support research studies with investigators from multiple schools and disciplines.

Position Summary

The primary purpose of this Registered Nurse position is to provide nursing services with a focus on care of participants who volunteer for clinical research studies conducted primarily in an ambulatory setting. The RN will provide professional nursing care to research subjects according to federal regulations, Good Clinical Practice, and local policies. The RN will support study implementation within the NC TraCS Clinical and Translational Research Center (CTRC) and UNC Medical Center, and may provide research on-location services at UNC Health clinics and hospitals. The RN will manage clinical and research support activities to ensure patient safety, protocol integrity and accurate data collection.

Job Responsibilities:

Care requirements will be determined by the scope of study participation, clinical condition, and study procedures. Duties include direct patient care for adults and pediatrics, phlebotomy and IV insertion, administration of investigational medications, monitoring and observation, ECGs, specimen collection and processing, data collection, health teaching related to study activities, documentation of care, reporting patient response, and contributing to CTRC quality improvement programs including training of non-licensed personnel.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

License to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Demonstrated knowledge of professional nursing care principles, standards and practices.

Relevant nursing experience.

Ability to work effectively with diverse individuals; strong communication with patients, healthcare personnel, staff, and others.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

Strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize multiple tasks.

Flexible, collaborative, and willing to assist others as needed.

Positive, results-oriented work environment contributes to team morale.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Current Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Valid NC Driver’s License Required.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Experience with human subjects in a clinical research setting.

Experience in pediatric nursing in hospital or clinic settings.

Background in healthcare with emphasis on medical-surgical nursing.

Experience providing patient care within UNC Health Hospitals or Clinics.

Proficiency with Epic or UNC Health’s electronic medical record system.

Experience administering biotherapy or investigational medications.

Strong computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Proficiency in IV access and/or phlebotomy.

Special Physical/Mental Requirements

Visual attention and mental concentration required; ability to remain at a computer for extended periods and to move up to 30 lbs with or without accommodation.

Ability to travel within hospital, campus and offsite locations for research on-location functions with or without accommodation.
