Clinical Context:
The primary purpose of this Registered Nurse position is to provide nursing services with a focus on the care of participants who volunteer for clinical research studies conducted primarily in an ambulatory setting. The RN will provide specialized, professional nursing care to research subjects for healthy volunteers and to those with unusual and distinctive medical problems according to federal regulations, Good Clinical Practice, and local and institutional policies. The RN will support study implementation within the context of care delivery settings such as in the NC TraCS’s Clinical and Translational Research Center (CTRC) and UNC Medical Center, as well as provide on-location research services at UNC Health clinics and hospitals, and the Schools of UNC. The RN will provide management of clinical and research support activities to ensure patient safety, address clinical needs and ensure protocol integrity and accurate data collection. The RN will ensure the integrity of research data while maintaining care that is safe, efficient, timely, effective, equitable, compassionate and patient-centered. Responsibilities
Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Provide direct, individualized care to adult and pediatric research patients. Phlebotomy and IV insertion; administration of investigational medications. Monitoring and observation; performing ECGs; collecting and processing biological specimens; other data collection. Provide direction and health teaching related to study protocol activities. Report and record care rendered and patient responses to care. Contribute to the CTRC’s continuous quality improvement programs, including training of non-licensed research personnel. Minimum Education and Experience
License to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina. Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Required qualifications include: Demonstrated knowledge of professional nursing care principles, standards and practices. Relevant nursing experience. Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of individuals and maintain strong communication with patients, healthcare personnel, staff and others. Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team. Strong attention to detail with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks. Flexible, collaborative, and willing to assist others as needed. Ability to maintain a positive, results-oriented work environment that contributes to team morale and collaboration. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Current Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Valid NC Driver’s License. Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Experience working with human subjects in a clinical research setting. Previous experience in pediatric nursing within a hospital or clinic setting. Strong background in healthcare, with emphasis on medical-surgical nursing. Experience providing direct patient care within UNC Health Hospitals or Clinics. Proficiency with Epic, UNC Health’s electronic medical record system. Experience in administration of biotherapy and/or investigational medications. Strong computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook). Proficiency in intravenous (IV) access and/or phlebotomy. Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Visual attention and mental concentration required due to clinical nature of work. Ability to remain at a computer for extended periods; ability to move 30 lbs with or without accommodation. Ability to travel within the hospital, on campus, and to offsite locations for research on-location functions with or without accommodation. Campus Security Authority Responsibilities
