About the role The Utilities Engineer is responsible for the efficient, reliable, and compliant operation of all site utility systems, providing technical direction and supervision to the utilities team, while ensuring optimal system performance, regulatory compliance, and energy efficiency in support of site production and facilities.
Responsibilities
Oversee and manage the operation and maintenance of all utility systems—including NH3 refrigeration, cooling towers, hot water, nitrogen (N₂), and hydrogen (H₂) systems—to ensure safety, reliability, and compliance with internal standards and regulatory requirements.
Supervise and provide technical leadership to Utilities Operators, ensuring proper shift coverage, training, and performance management.
Develop and implement preventive and predictive maintenance plans for utility assets to maximize uptime and reliability.
Monitor system performance and utility consumption, identifying opportunities for optimization and cost reduction.
Ensure all utility systems comply with environmental, health, safety, and quality regulations, including permits and inspections.
Troubleshoot and resolve utility-related issues promptly to minimize operational disruption.
Collaborate with Engineering, Facilities, Production, and EHS teams to support utility needs for projects, expansions, and shutdowns.
Lead initiatives focused on sustainability, energy efficiency, and infrastructure improvements related to utilities.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation including P&IDs, SOPs, operating logs, and regulatory records.
Manage contractors and vendors working on utility systems, ensuring adherence to safety and performance standards.
Participate in audits, risk assessments, and incident investigations related to utilities operations.
About you
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline.
5+ years of experience in utilities engineering, operations, or maintenance within an industrial or manufacturing environment.
Experience with NH3 refrigeration systems, cooling towers, steam, hot water, compressed air, nitrogen (N₂), hydrogen (H₂), water treatment, and waste systems.
Prior experience supervising operators or technicians in utilities or facilities operations.
Knowledge of automated monitoring and control systems such as BMS, SCADA, and PLCs.
Familiarity with safety and environmental regulations relevant to utilities operation (e.g., OSHA, EPA, local codes).
Strong troubleshooting, communication, and leadership skills.
Ability to manage contractors and service providers effectively.
Relevant certifications (stationary engineer license, or refrigeration technician certification) are a plus.
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Civil, or related field).
