Job Description

UC San Diego maintains a diverse fleet of over 1,200 vehicles. All maintenance is performed in-house by skilled technicians. The fleet includes police vehicles, research and lab vehicles, catering and public safety trucks, low-speed electric vehicles, and buses and mobile clinic motorhomes. The Fleet Services Dept. is looking to hire a temporary Automotive Technician (Light Duty Vehicles) for a five- to six-month assignment (approximately). Perform skilled automotive work under general supervision. Diagnose, repair, and service gasoline, hybrid, electric, and alternative fuel vehicles (hydrogen, propane) including sedans, trucks, vans, police cars, golf carts, and low-speed vehicles Conduct preventative maintenance including oil and filter changes, brake inspections and replacements, tire rotations and replacements, fluid checks and replacements, and safety inspections. Troubleshoot and repair vehicle systems and components. Estimate labor and material costs; maintain records and reports. Respond to campus service calls (e.g., jump starts). Use University-issued tools including hand tools, diagnostic laptops and scan tools, and tire changers, wheel balancers, lifts, and jacks QUALIFICATIONS

Experience Requirements

Minimum 1 year of hands-on automotive repair experience (2+ years preferred). Experience with, gasoline, hybrid, and electric vehicles. Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision. Must be able to work collaboratively with other technicians Must be adaptable, team-oriented, and eager to learn and grow in the trade. Technical Knowledge & Skills

Proficient in diagnostics using OBD-II and scan tools. Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and service bulletins Knowledge of preventive maintenance schedules, repair techniques, and vehicle safety systems Familiarity with hybrid/electric vehicle safety procedures. Competent in using laptops for work orders and parts/labor tracking. The University of California is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
