Electrical Project Engineer - Substation

Join us as an Electrical Project Engineer – Substation at Black & Veatch. This is a full‑time, staff position located in Walnut Creek, CA.
Key Responsibilities
Function as Technical Specialist or Project Lead, providing project coordination, guidance and expertise on assigned substation projects.
Support substation projects up to 765kV in detailed design and EPC.
Develop protection and control design deliverables: protective relays, panel arrangements, one-line/single line diagrams, three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, relay panel wiring and equipment wiring.
Develop physical design deliverables: yard layout plans, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, auxiliary AC/DC power systems.
Perform or oversee quality review of electrical substation design packages.
Provide guidance and mentorship to junior team members.
Prepare electrical equipment specifications and BOMs for procurement and construction.
Communicate and coordinate with clients, vendors, subcontractors and stakeholders.
Present proposals, designs and project activities.
Travel to client and vendor offices or project sites for design reviews, construction coordination and field verification.
Prepare and manage design budgets and schedules.
Support business development or pursuit activities.
Preferred Qualifications
High voltage substation design experience – Physical and/or Protection & Controls.
Project lead and technical specialist experience with utility substation clients and projects.
QA/QC reviews – quality assurance/checks.
Experience coordinating and communicating with clients, multidisciplinary leads and project managers.
Professional Engineer (PE) license.
Proficient with Bluebeam Revu and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited program.
Minimum of 5 years related work experience.
Must be able to complete pre‑employment onboarding requirements (criminal/civil background check, drug screen, motor‑vehicle records search).
Annual compensation range: $136,825.00 – $228,500.00.
