Work You Will Do As a Senior Equipment Operator you will operate various heavy equipment such as road graders, sewer cleaners, and hydraulic excavators for bridge and roadway maintenance. You will perform minor maintenance (checking fluids, brakes, tire pressure, and cleaning) and assist in repair of operating equipment. Additionally you may supervise Department of Corrections inmate crews on maintenance activities and coordinate crew operations.

Specific Responsibilities

Operate vehicles and large equipment for bridge and roadway maintenance.

Perform minor maintenance and servicing on equipment.

Assist in repairing operating equipment.

Clean and wash equipment.

Supervise Department of Corrections inmate crews performing maintenance activities (optional duty).

Oversee crews performing maintenance activities (optional duty if overseeing contracted employees).

Coordinate, participate, and direct maintenance activity of the assigned crew.

Assist in selecting materials, supplies, equipment, and plan workloads, workflows, and deadlines.

Maintain records of operation and prepare daily paperwork such as crew activity reports and vehicle check lists.

Perform independent manual labor incidental to job assignments.

Perform temporary traffic control (maintenance of traffic).

Perform rough carpentry, masonry, painting, and assist in assembling and erecting highway signs.

Train crew members in the operation of heavy equipment and basic temporary traffic control.

Assist with crew activity reports as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

Mathematical calculations; standard safety rules and procedures; procedures, techniques, and use of equipment in maintenance and repair of highways, bridges, and related structures.

Skills in:

Operating hand and power tools; operating and performing minor maintenance on large equipment and vehicles; completing job‑related reports and forms; communicating verbally and in writing.

Abilities to:

Operate heavy equipment; train others; read and understand job‑related materials; develop and maintain effective working relationships; lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds; stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend frequently; work outdoors in various weather conditions; stand for extended periods.

Respond to emergencies and be on‑call (24‑hour duty) when necessary.

Operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) as required by your valid Class “A” CDL.

Obtain and maintain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) – Intermediate Level within one year.

Work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.

Other Job‑Related Requirements

Respond to emergencies and be on‑call (24‑hour duty) when necessary.

Operate a CMV consistent with the type of CDL required.

Maintain a valid Class “A” CDL.

Obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) – Intermediate Level within one year.

Work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or Certificate of Equivalency and four years of infrastructure construction or maintenance experience; or five years of experience in place of a diploma.

Valid Class “A” CDL at time of hire.

Requirements (Driving Record and Clearance) This position requires a valid Class “A” driver license with an acceptable driving record. A mandatory drug screening will be performed on the successful applicant. Applicants must register with the FMCSA Clearinghouse and comply with FMCSA drug‑screening requirements.
