Position Title: Athletic Coach
Reports to: Athletic Director, Assistant Athletic Director, & Principal
FLSA: Non-Exempt
Summary of the position: A Coach, or Head Coach, guides and teaches athletes the skills they need for a specific sport. Their duties include coaching skills, helping to condition athletes, and enforcing safety procedures.
Qualifications: Appropriate knowledge of sport and rules of the specific sport; prior coaching experience preferred.
Supervises: Student-Athletes and Assistant Coach(s)
Essential Functions
Communicate effectively with Student-Athletes, Parents, and the Athletic Department
Know and effectively administer the Madison Student Athletic Handbook & Coaches Handbook
Follow all IHSAA policies as dictated by IHSAA By-Laws
Complete IHSAA Rule Meetings on time
Complete National Federation of High School Sports courses
Hold CPR/AED certification
Know academic eligibility requirements for athletes
Schedule transportation
Keep accurate stats
Seek professional development opportunities
Attend regularly scheduled athletic meetings with the Athletic Director and/or coaching staff
Maintain athletic equipment and facilities
Handle financial, budgeting, and fundraising tasks
Assist with off-season conditioning
Proactively communicate to the Athletic Department regarding student-athletes, parents, other coaches, etc.
Responsibilities to Student-Athletes
Be a great role model
Supervise practices, games, team trips, and locker rooms
Hold student-athletes accountable at all times
Build positive relationships with all student-athletes
Ensure players are safe and provide a safe environment
Explain discipline enforcement procedures and communicate to the Athletic Department and parents
Be dependable
Help student-athletes obtain academic and athletic goals
Expect student-athletes and parents to complete program evaluations at season’s end
Organize and assist with off-season training planning and execution for specific sport
Be involved at all levels of the specific sport—youth, middle, and high school
Personnel
Conduct end-of-season evaluations and meetings
Athletic Director evaluates varsity head coaches
Varsity head coaches evaluate assistant coaches and junior high coaches
Head coaches complete self-evaluations via Coach Evaluator
Awards and Recognition Programs
Organize all athletic recognition programs such as the End of Season Awards
Complete all end-of-season programs within the timeframe set by the Athletic Department
Submit award certificate information to the Athletic Department within a week of the season’s end
Community Relations
Represent Madison Consolidated Schools and the program positively
Promote and publicize program achievements promptly
Develop community outreach each season
