About AMPERA AMPERA is redefining clean, sovereign energy with compact, ultra-safe nuclear systems that power AI, industry, and defense with zero emissions and unmatched reliability. Our modular micro-reactors combine the best of fusion and fission to deliver scalable, deployable, and inherently safe energy anywhere — from AI data centers to remote or defense operations.
As a fast-growing company, AMPERA blends the agility of a startup with the ambition of a global energy innovator. Joining us means becoming part of a bold mission to revolutionize how the world generates power through advanced nuclear design, radiation protection, and safety innovation.
Position Overview AMPERA is seeking a highly skilled Radiation Safety Engineer to lead the design, implementation, and management of radiation protection systems and safety protocols for AMPERA’s next-generation nuclear micro-reactors. This role is critical in ensuring the protection of personnel, facilities, and the environment during reactor development, testing, and operation.
The ideal candidate has deep expertise in radiation shielding design, dose modeling, and compliance with NRC, DOE, and OSHA standards. This position requires close collaboration with reactor design, materials, and fuel development teams to integrate safety considerations throughout the entire system lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and implement comprehensive radiation protection programs for laboratory and reactor facilities.
Design shielding systems and conduct dose rate calculations using tools such as MCNP, SCALE, or FLUKA.
Monitor and assess occupational radiation exposure and ensure compliance with ALARA principles.
Oversee calibration, maintenance, and deployment of radiation detection and monitoring equipment.
Support reactor testing and prototype operations with real-time radiation safety assessments.
Prepare and maintain regulatory documentation, safety analyses, and licensing submissions.
Train personnel in radiation safety procedures, contamination control, and emergency response.
Interface with NRC, DOE, and other regulatory bodies during audits, inspections, and reporting.
Collaborate on shielding and containment design optimization for compact micro-reactor systems.
Qualifications
M.S. or Ph.D. in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or related discipline.
5–10 years of experience in radiation protection, nuclear facility safety, or regulatory compliance.
Proficiency with radiation transport and shielding analysis codes (MCNP, SCALE, FLUKA, or equivalent).
Familiarity with NRC/DOE regulations, ANSI standards, and radiological control procedures.
Experience with radiation detection instruments, dosimetry programs, and contamination monitoring.
Strong analytical, documentation, and communication skills.
U.S. citizenship or eligibility for security clearance may be required.
What We Offer
Competitive salary
Comprehensive benefits package including healthcare, dental, vision, and 401(k).
Opportunity to build and oversee radiation safety programs for cutting-edge nuclear technologies.
A collaborative, mission-driven environment dedicated to innovation and safety excellence.
Professional growth potential as AMPERA expands its advanced reactor design and testing operations.
