Process Safety Engineer
Location: Palm Beach Gardens, FL Employment Type: Full-time, Exempt
About AMPERA AMPERA is redefining clean, sovereign energy with compact, ultra-safe nuclear systems that power AI, industry, and defense with zero emissions and unmatched reliability. Our modular micro-reactors combine the best of fusion and fission to deliver scalable, deployable, and inherently safe energy anywhere — from AI data centers to remote or defense operations.
As a rapidly growing company, AMPERA combines the agility of a startup with the mission of a global clean energy innovator. Joining us means contributing to a bold initiative to revolutionize how the world generates power through advanced nuclear design, chemical process safety, and next-generation manufacturing.
Position Overview AMPERA is seeking a Process Safety Engineer to develop, implement, and oversee safety management systems across AMPERA’s fuel processing, chemical handling, and reactor development operations. This individual will ensure that all experimental and industrial-scale processes comply with safety, environmental, and nuclear regulatory standards.
The ideal candidate will have experience in hazard analysis (HAZOP, FMEA, LOPA), risk management, and process design for high-temperature, chemical, and nuclear environments. This position will play a key role in designing inherently safe systems that support the manufacture and operation of AMPERA’s hybrid micro-reactors.
Key Responsibilities Develop and manage AMPERA’s process safety program for nuclear fuel and chemical processing operations.
Conduct HAZOP, PRA, and fault tree analyses to identify and mitigate potential hazards.
Design and implement safety systems for chemical reactors, fuel processing equipment, and thermal systems.
Review P&IDs, process flow diagrams, and control logic to ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards.
Coordinate with engineering teams to design intrinsically safe systems, containment strategies, and emergency response protocols.
Support regulatory compliance efforts under DOE, NRC, OSHA, and EPA frameworks.
Develop safety documentation including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Process Safety Information (PSI), and Safety Analysis Reports (SAR).
Lead root-cause analyses for incidents or near-misses and implement corrective actions.
Train personnel in chemical handling, radiation protection, and emergency response best practices.
Qualifications B.S. or M.S. in Chemical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or related field.
5–10 years of experience in process safety, chemical plant operations, or nuclear facility safety management.
Strong knowledge of process safety standards (OSHA PSM, EPA RMP, NRC 10 CFR 830).
Experience performing safety analysis for high-temperature, high-pressure, or radiological systems.
Familiarity with HAZOP, LOPA, FMEA, and PRA methodologies.
Working knowledge of chemical process control systems and industrial instrumentation.
Excellent leadership, analytical, and communication skills.
U.S. citizenship or eligibility for security clearance may be required.
What We Offer Competitive salary.
Comprehensive benefits package including healthcare, dental, vision, and 401(k).
Opportunity to shape the safety framework for next-generation nuclear and chemical technologies.
A collaborative, mission-driven culture that prioritizes innovation and operational excellence.
Significant career advancement potential as AMPERA expands its research and manufacturing programs.
