The Role The Engineer Lead Test will work directly with others and interface intelligently with trades, management and the customer. Responsibilities include technical submittals of design proposals, engineering calculations and analyses, drawing reviews, presentations, operating instructions, test procedures, maintenance procedures, work deferral requests, and departure from specification requests. The position may require combined work with internal/external design and/or test engineering personnel, including NAVSEA, Naval shipyards, General Dynamics-Electric Boat, vendors, etc.
Key Responsibilities
Work on shipboard systems aboard Nuclear Powered Aircraft Carriers or Submarines while undergoing construction/repair.
Develop and direct preparation and execution of comprehensive test plans, procedures and schedules for completing systems.
Interface with NAVSEA, Electric Boat, and internal departments to coordinate design and testing activities and resolve technical issues.
Prepare and present technical reports, analyses, and recommendations to management and external customers.
Track overall test progress, troubleshoot and resolve major shipboard technical issues and make recommendations to the department manager as required.
Support Sea Trials, testing the ship’s mechanical, electrical, and combat systems at sea.
Ability to climb on and around ships including stairs, ladders, masts, and scaffolding.
Willingness to work around moving machinery at heights and in confined or restricted spaces on vessels undergoing construction/repair.
Good leadership skills and project management experience (test coordination, resource planning, budgeting and test scheduling).
Must Have
Lead Test Engineer (LTE) or Ship Safety Officer (SSO) or Watch Supervisor or Watch Officer Certification or Trade REC Coordinator (TRC) and Trade REC Oversight Agent (TROA) Certification and 6 years of relevant professional/exempt experience.
Nice to Have
Working knowledge of shipyard operations, including component fabrication and assembly and final outfitting.
Ability to interpret and review engineering drawings, specifications, and manufacturing documentation.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills for interfacing with trades, management, and government customers.
Experience as Assistant CTE on Submarine Non-Propulsion Electronics (NPE).
Strong problem-solving, leadership, and mentoring skills with the ability to manage small project teams.
DOD Security Clearance is preferred, but not required to start.
