Chief of Staff, Managing Director of Administration & HR The Focused Ultrasound Foundation, a mission-driven medical research, education, and patient advocacy organization in Charlottesville, VA, is seeking a Managing Director of Information Technology & Chief Information Officer. This is an exciting opportunity to support groundbreaking medical research in a small, entrepreneurial environment where precision, service, and results matter.

The Chief Information Officer (CIO) is the strategic technology and data leader for the Focused Ultrasound Foundation. This role drives enterprise IT strategy, digital innovation, and data platform development to advance the Foundation’s mission. The CIO ensures that technology not only enables efficient operations but becomes a core differentiator in research, clinical data initiatives, and stakeholder engagement.

The CIO leads a high-performing technology organization that delivers secure, reliable, customer-focused IT services while innovating with data platforms, Salesforce, AI, and advanced media technologies. This role partners closely with scientific, program, and executive leadership to define and execute a technology and data roadmap supporting clinical data repositories, patient registries, and the adoption of systems such as Oracle CTMS.

This is an on-site position based in Charlottesville, VA. Candidates must be able to work in person at our office. Remote work is not an option for this role.

Key Responsibilities Strategic Technology & Data Leadership

Develop and maintain a 3–5 year technology and data strategy aligned with the Foundation’s mission and growth.

Drive the evolution of IT from a support function to a strategic asset, enabling clinical data repositories, registries, and research informatics.

Define and communicate the enterprise architecture for infrastructure, applications, and data platforms.

Identify and prioritize transformative technology initiatives with executive leadership.

Maintain relationships with Darden AI Institute and UVA School of Data Science.

Data Platforms & Research Informatics

Lead strategy and execution for clinical data repositories, patient registries, Oracle CTMS, and other research data systems.

Define data governance, security, interoperability, and integration standards for research and clinical data assets.

Partner with scientific and program teams to ensure data strategy aligns with research funding and mission impact.

Infrastructure & Cybersecurity

Oversee the planning, modernization, and operation of servers, networks, cloud platforms, and end-user environments.

Lead enterprise cybersecurity governance (policies, risk assessments, compliance such as HIPAA/PCI/GDPR).

Manage vendor and SOC relationships, incident response, and ongoing security education.

Ensure business continuity and disaster recovery plans are robust and tested.

Customer Service & IT Operations

Build and maintain a responsive, high-satisfaction IT support culture.

Oversee helpdesk operations and IT Systems Administrators to deliver seamless user experience.

Communicate proactively with staff about technology changes and service updates.

Partnership with Specialized Technology Leaders

Collaborate with the Salesforce Platforms Director to ensure the CRM and marketing automation strategy aligns with infrastructure, security, and data architecture.

Partner with the AV/AI Manager to support AI integration, AV infrastructure, and secure deployment of AI tools to increase staff effectiveness.

Guide the Full Stack Developer in web architecture and integrations to ensure reliability and scalability.

Budget, Vendor, and Governance

Develop and manage the IT and data platform budget, aligning investments with organizational strategy.

Oversee vendor contracts, software licensing, and procurement for all IT and data systems.

Establish and maintain IT policies, standards, and governance frameworks.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field (or equivalent experience).

10+ years of progressive IT leadership experience, with 5+ years at the director or executive level.

Proven ability to build and execute enterprise technology and data strategies in a complex or research-driven organization.

Strong technical foundation in:

Cybersecurity frameworks (NIST, ISO, HIPAA/GDPR compliance, SIEM/Vulnerability mgmt).

Data platforms (warehousing, APIs, interoperability standards, clinical/research informatics).

Working knowledge of Salesforce architecture (security, integrations, governance).

Understanding of AI/ML adoption, data governance for AI, and integration with enterprise systems.

Strong vendor and budget management skills.

Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with ability to translate complex technology concepts for non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with clinical trials systems (CTMS, EDC), patient registries, or healthcare data platforms.

Advanced degree (MS, MBA, MHA, or equivalent) or CIO/CDO track certifications.

Prior experience leading digital transformation initiatives in mission-driven or research environments.
