Senior Functional Safety Engineer | Contract | Normal, IL (Onsite) About the Role
We are seeking a
Senior Functional Safety Engineer
to ensure compliance, safety, and operational excellence across all manufacturing and equipment systems. This role is hands‑on and deeply technical — ideal for engineers experienced in machinery and control system safety, standards compliance, and risk assessment in industrial or automotive manufacturing environments.
You will participate in
equipment acceptance testing, commissioning, and continuous improvement
of safety systems, while working cross‑functionally with design, operations, and EHS teams.
Key Responsibilities
Lead
risk assessments
in accordance with
ISO 12100
and other relevant standards.
Evaluate equipment and machinery designs for
mechanical, electrical, automation, and control system safety .
Conduct
Equipment Safety Buyoffs
with cross‑functional teams.
Develop, implement, and improve
equipment safety standards
and procedures.
Review and interpret
electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic safety circuits , evaluating performance levels and circuit structure.
Verify and document compliance with
ANSI, UL, NFPA, and ISO
standards.
Participate in
equipment acceptance testing
and commissioning activities.
Identify safety risks and recommend corrective or preventive actions.
Create and deliver
training sessions
on equipment and machinery safety.
Maintain detailed documentation of compliance records and audit results.
Collaborate with
EHS
staff to support investigations, inspections, and safety audits.
Required Qualifications
Strong knowledge of
mechanical, electrical, automation, and control system design .
Experience with applicable safety standards:
ANSI, UL, NFPA, ISO , etc.
Ability to interpret
safety circuit schematics
and evaluate performance levels.
Expertise in
electrical circuit design
per
NEC, UL 508A, and NFPA 79 .
Hands‑on experience with either
ISO 13849
or
NFPA 79 & ANSI B11 .
Excellent documentation and analytical skills with a focus on continuous improvement.
Preferred Qualifications
Certified Functional Safety Professional (CFSP/CFSE)
or
Certified Machine Safety Expert (CMSE) .
Experience in
battery or EV manufacturing environments .
Familiarity with
hazardous area classifications , occupancy classification, and hazardous material inventory management.
