The Correctional Officer Trainee is an entry‑level, full‑time position with the Alabama Department of Corrections. Employees perform correctional work in state prisons, overseeing the custody, rehabilitation, and reentry of inmates. Trainees assist in the custody, transport, detention, treatment, and rehabilitation of adult inmates in accordance with ADOC regulations and job‑specific training. They must be alert, decisive, demonstrate good judgment, and serve the citizens of Alabama with honor and integrity. Responsibilities
Stand watch in halls or tower walls to control inmate movement. Supervise groups of inmates on work details, instructing them on manual assignments, and checking them in and out of the institution. Inspect quarters for safety, sanitary conditions, and for contraband; search inmates and visitors. Maintain constant alertness, report unusual conditions, and inspect doors, fences, and security equipment. Conduct regular and unscheduled inmate counts and constant checks on supervised inmates. Complete reports and maintain records of work progress, inmate behavior, rule infractions, and unusual occurrences. Drive transfer vehicles and keep screens and other safety equipment in perfect condition. Explain rules, procedures, and available services to inmates; assist with personal problems, education, vocational opportunities, and work assignments. Observe inmate behavior, submit evaluation reports, and instruct inmates in personal hygiene, discipline, and proper etiquette. Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED. 19 years of age or older. Valid certification of having passed the Basic Ability Test (BAT) for Law Enforcement Officers (also called ACT WorkKeys) or proof of an Associate's degree or higher from an accredited college or university. U.S. citizenship at time of appointment. Valid driver license from state of residency. Successful completion of a 10‑week training program at the ADOC Training Center in Selma, Alabama. Pre‑employment physical assessment. Background investigation, including fingerprint‑based criminal history check and drug screening. Eligibility for employment; felonies and domestic‑violence convictions disqualify candidates. Honorable discharge if veteran. Assignment anywhere within the State. Special Requirements
Applicants previously certified by APOSTC need not take the BAT if active within the last ten years. Benefits
