General Overview The Correctional Officer Trainee is an entry-level, full-time position with the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC). Employees serve a critical role in overseeing the custody, rehabilitation, and reentry of inmates. Correctional officers participate in the custody, transport, detention, treatment, and rehabilitation of adult inmates in correctional institutions following ADOC administrative regulations and job-specific training. Correctional officers must be alert, decisive, demonstrate good judgment, and serve the citizens of the State of Alabama with honor and integrity.

Responsibilities of a Correctional Officer

Stand watch in halls or wall towers to control inmate movement.

Supervise groups of inmates on work details in kitchens, shops, laundries, and recreation areas; instruct inmates performing semi-skilled and unskilled manual assignments; check inmates in and out of the institution.

Inspect quarters for safety and sanitary conditions, check for contraband, and search inmates and visitors for contraband.

Maintain constant alertness and report unusual conditions and disturbances; inspect doors, fences, and security equipment.

Make regular and unscheduled inmate counts and constant checks on supervised inmates.

Complete reports and keep records of work progress, inmate behavior, infractions, and unusual occurrences.

Drive transfer vehicle, inspecting and maintaining safety equipment.

Explain rules and services to inmates; assist with personal problems, education, vocational opportunities, and work assignments.

Observe inmate behavior and adjustment; submit evaluation reports.

Instruct inmates in personal hygiene, discipline, and proper etiquette.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED certificate (copy required).

19 years of age or older.

Provide either:

Certification of passing the Basic Ability Test (BAT) for Law Enforcement Officers (ACT WorkKeys).

Proof of an Associate’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university.

Applicants previously certified by APOSTC do not need to take the BAT if active within the last ten years.

Special Requirements

U.S. Citizenship at the time of appointment.

Valid driver's license from the state of residency.

Meet APOSTC requirements, agency training, and other specialized training during probationary period, including a 10‑week training program at the ADOC Training Center in Selma, Alabama.

Participate in a Pre‑Employment Physical Assessment; details on ADOC website.

Successfully complete a background investigation with a fingerprint‑based criminal history background check and drug screening. Felony and/or domestic violence convictions are disqualifying.

Veteran applicants must have honorable discharge.

Assignment may be anywhere within the state.
