Salary Information $55,375.20 – $70,718.40 per year $26.62 – $34.00 per hour Up to 27% salary increases during the first 18 months of employment.

General Overview The Correctional Officer Trainee is an entry‑level, full‑time position with ADOC. Employees play a critical role in the overall success of ADOC by overseeing the custody, rehabilitation, and reentry of inmates. Correctional officers participate in custody, transport, detainment, treatment, and rehabilitation of adult inmates in correctional institutions following ADOC administrative regulations and job‑specific training. They must be alert, decisive, and demonstrate good judgment while serving the citizens of Alabama with honor and integrity.

Responsibilities

Stand watch in halls or at wall towers to control inmate movement.

Supervise groups of inmates on work details in kitchens, shops, laundries, and recreation areas; instruct inmates performing semi‑skilled and unskilled manual assignments; check inmates in and out of the institution.

Inspects quarters for safety, sanitary conditions, and contraband; searches inmates and visitors for contraband.

Maintain constant alertness, report unusual conditions and disturbances; inspect doors, fences, and other security equipment.

Conduct regular and unscheduled inmate counts and maintain accurate counts of supervised inmates.

Complete reports and keep records of work progress, inmate behavior, infractions of conduct rules, and unusual occurrences.

Drive transfer vehicle and inspect and maintain all safety equipment.

Explain to inmates the rules, procedures, and services available at correctional institutions; assist inmates with personal problems, educational and vocational opportunities, and work assignments through daily interactions.

Observe inmate behavior and adjustment to the correctional environment; submit evaluation reports.

Instruct inmates in personal hygiene, discipline, and proper etiquette.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED (copy required during hiring).

19 years of age or older.

One of the following during the hiring process:

Valid certification of having passed the Basic Ability Test (BAT) for Law Enforcement Officers (also called ACT WorkKeys).

Proof of possession of an Associate’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university (copy of diploma and/or transcript required).

NOTE:

Applicants previously certified by APOSTC are not required to take the BAT if they have been active within the last ten (10) years.

Special Requirements

U.S. citizenship at the time of appointment.

Valid driver’s license from the state of residence.

Meeting APOSTC requirements, designated agency training, and completion of a 10‑week training program at the ADOC Training Center in Selma, Alabama during the probationary period.

Participation in a Pre‑Employment Physical Assessment.

Successful completion of a background investigation, including a fingerprint‑based criminal history background check and drug screening. Applicants with a felony and/or domestic violence conviction are not eligible.

Veterans must have an honorable discharge.

Applicants are subject to assignment anywhere within the State of Alabama.
