Salary Range:
$47,401 – $52,152 per year
Job Summary The Counselor for the Upward Bound program will assist the Upward Bound director in the development and implementation of the program. The role includes coordinating program services, acting as a liaison with high schools, building positive relationships with community partners, assessing student needs, advising and tutoring, tracking student contacts and entering data, and conducting workshops for students and parents. The counselor’s primary work location is Johnson High School in Oakwood, GA; some work may be completed at UNG’s Gainesville campus one day per week. During the 6‑week summer residential component, the counselor will reside on UNG Dahlonega campus during the school year.
Responsibilities
Recruit Upward Bound participants to provide a rich program for student high school success and postsecondary enrollment.
Communicate Upward Bound goals to community partners, parents, and high school students.
Facilitate groups for students and parents on college readiness and career awareness.
Plan, implement, and chaperone students on workshops and trips; assist in organizing monthly student meetings.
Develop, coordinate, and deliver workshops for parents and students covering college admission, scholarships, financial aid, and summer programs.
Document all student/parent contacts and enter data into the tracking system.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree required.
One to three years of experience in a secondary/postsecondary school setting serving first‑generation and/or economically disadvantaged students; or experience working with a college preparation program or community organization.
Experience working with students who are academically unprepared and ability to develop, implement, and facilitate content area and learning strategies workshops and study groups.
Ability to speak Spanish/Bilingual.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s Degree preferred.
Degree in education, guidance, or counseling field preferred.
