The
Chief Estimator
is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of the company's estimating department. This senior role requires a seasoned professional with deep expertise in electrical construction, exceptional analytical skills, and a proven track record of successful bidding on a variety of project types. The Chief Estimator ensures all estimates are accurate, competitive, and completed in a timely manner to support the company’s strategic goals and profitability.
Responsibilities
Lead the entire estimating process from project inception to final bid submission for large, complex electrical construction projects.
Review and analyze blueprints, specifications, proposals, and other documentation to prepare time, cost, and labor estimates.
Determine scope of work and required contents of the estimate; collaborate with operations and project management to ensure constructability and resource availability are accurately reflected.
Perform detailed quantity takeoffs and price all aspects of the electrical work, including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontracts.
Develop and maintain a comprehensive database of costs, including labor rates, material pricing, and vendor quotes, specific to the Houston market.
Present estimates and participate in bid reviews with senior management and executive team.
Prepare and submit competitive bids and proposals, ensuring compliance with all project specifications and requirements.
Manage, mentor, and develop a team of junior and senior estimators, fostering a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Establish and maintain standard estimating procedures, policies, and best practices.
Schedule and track bid deadlines, workload, and resource allocation within the department.
Coordinate with the Project Management and Operations departments during bid hand-off to ensure a smooth transition from estimating to execution.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field preferred. Relevant equivalent experience will be considered.
Minimum of 10+ years of progressive experience in electrical estimating, with at least 3-5 years in a leadership or Chief Estimator role within the electrical contracting industry.
In-depth knowledge of the Houston-area electrical construction market (labor, material costs, subcontractors, permitting).
Expert proficiency with industry-standard estimating software (e.g., Accubid, ConEst, McCormick).
High proficiency in Bluebeam and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word).
Strong understanding of NEC (National Electrical Code) and local building codes.
Exceptional analytical, organizational, and time management skills. Strong written and verbal communication abilities. Proven leadership and team management capabilities.
