Description of Work Unit The Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) is a research, education, and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. This position will be based in Fort Collins, a small but growing and progressive city nestled against the eastern flanks of the central Rocky Mountains, approximately one hour north of Denver in north-central Colorado. Fort Collins offers an outdoor-focused lifestyle with trails, cultural events, museums, and more. Position Summary An Architectural Historian position is available with Colorado State University and the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML). The position will be in Fort Collins, CO, but the primary tasks will be related to projects at the Naval Reactors Facility (NRF) in Idaho. The Architectural Historian will be responsible for finalizing Historic American Engineering Records (HAER) reports and deliverables, including written historical and descriptive data, photographs and negatives, and associated records and forms in accordance with National Park Service (NPS) and Library of Congress standards. The Architectural Historian will also be responsible for finalizing the NRF building inventory, including completing Idaho State Historic Preservation Office’s (SHPO) site forms and site maps. Other tasks may include conducting background and archival research, contributing to Cultural Resources Management Plans (CRMP), supporting NHPA Section 106 documentation for maintenance projects, drafting MOAs for demolitions, and assisting with Programmatic Agreements (PAs). Position may require travel. This position is full-time with a strong preference for on-site work based at CSU in Fort Collins, but hybrid or remote work will be considered. The position has an anticipated end date of December 31, 2027. Required Job Qualifications MS/MA degree in architectural history, architecture, historic preservation, history, or related field. Minimum of two (2) years of professional work experience in architectural history, including historical and archival research; analyzing historical data, conducting architectural surveys and evaluations; and synthesizing and writing up the results of research. Meet the Secretary of Interior’s professional qualification standards (36 CFR 61). Familiarity with Federal historic preservation laws and regulations (e.g., NHPA, NEPA). Able to read and interpret complex construction plans, property records, maintenance records, as-built drawings, and work orders. Familiarity with HABS/HAER documentation and submission requirements. Experience creating site forms in accordance with SHPO requirements. Experience working with a wide range of data, maintaining organized details, and consistently meeting deadlines. Excellent writing skills and experience editing for grammar, clarity, and consistent format. Experience communicating technical information clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word) and Adobe Acrobat Pro. Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one by the employment start date. Legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; no visa sponsorship is provided for this position. Preferred Job Qualifications Familiarity with the Idaho SHPO and Idaho Cultural Resource Information System (ICRIS). Experience surveying buildings within industrial or military settings (e.g., DoD, DoE). Working knowledge of ESRI suite products (ArcMap, Arc Catalogue, ArcPro). Experience developing cultural resources management planning documents.
