Director of Nursing (DON)
Position Summary
The Director of Nursing is accountable for the development and maintenance of nursing service objectives and standards of nursing practice. Has administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability for functions, activities, and training of nursing staff. Is responsible for the planning, development, and implementation of care delivery systems. Orients, instructs, and supervises personnel and functions. Coordinates nursing services with other departments. Maintains supplies and adequate equipment. Maintains compliance with Federal, State, and local standards and regulations to assure quality outcomes of care.
Responsibilities
Resident Care Coordination and Oversight: Manages the RAI process, MDS coordination, care planning, and nursing care delivery. Oversees nursing staff to ensure accurate and quality care, maintains updated nursing procedures, and ensures physician visits are supported. Regulatory Compliance and Nursing Standards: Applies nursing policies in accordance with state and federal regulations and the Nurse Practice Act. Promotes residents rights, medication safety, and continuous quality improvement initiatives. Interdisciplinary Collaboration and Communication: Coordinates care planning and resident services across departments and with external providers. Serves as a consultant for admissions, discharges, and referrals in collaboration with social services and administration. Staffing and Department Efficiency: Manages staffing, scheduling, and staff meetings. Ensures efficiency and cost-effectiveness in line with the facility budget and goals. Supply and Equipment Management: Oversees the ordering, receiving, and maintenance of supplies and equipment. Collaborates with the Maintenance Director and Administrator for repairs and large purchases. Facility Culture, Compliance, and Education: Fosters a positive, inclusive workplace culture with strong customer service. Maintains resident confidentiality, attends required meetings and trainings, and ensures staff are educated on current policies and best practices.
QAULIFICATIONS
Licensure and Training Requirements: Must be a Registered Nurse licensed in Minnesota with training in rehabilitation, gerontology, nursing administration, management, supervision, or psychiatric/geriatric nursingeither before or within 12 months of appointment as Director of Nursing Services. Communication and Functional Abilities: Must be able to communicate effectively in verbal and written form and perform all essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation. Background and Compliance: Must pass a criminal background check as required by the Minnesota Department of Human Services. Preferred Experience and Required Soft Skills: Preferred experience in healthcare, especially in skilled nursing or assisted living; must also demonstrate adaptability, resilience, emotional intelligence, and interpersonal skills to build trust and handle diverse demands.
