Summary:

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is a key executive leader responsible for the day-to-day operational oversight of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital offering a full complement of advanced, comprehensive service lines. These include but are not limited to cardiac transplant program, Level IV NICU, emergency services, and other highly specialized services in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The COO ensures the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centered care while driving operational excellence, clinical integration, and financial performance across all hospital functions.

Responsibilities:

Provide strategic and operational leadership for hospital operations, including clinical and non-clinical departments. Support complex care delivery models across organ transplant, trauma, emergency services, surgical services, and other pediatric specialty services & programs. Collaborate with senior hospital and health system leadership to develop and execute strategic plans that support the hospital’s mission, vision, and long-term growth objectives. Builds and maintains relationships with key stakeholders, including physicians, department leaders, employees, patients, and community leaders, to promote collaboration and alignment of interests. Manage large-scale operating and capital budgets with fiscal responsibility and strategic prioritization. Drive operational efficiency, effectiveness and performance to ensure high-quality care, patient safety, regulatory compliance, & operational efficiency and foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and excellence in patient and employee experience. Represents the hospital in external and community forums, industry conferences, and professional associations to enhance the organization’s visibility and reputation. Evaluate market trends, competitive dynamics, and demographic shifts to identify opportunities for service expansion, partnerships, and market differentiation. Translate organizational vision into actionable operating plans that align with the hospital’s mission and long-term strategy. Partner with physician and clinical leaders to enhance service line performance, clinical outcomes, and innovation. Plan, execute, and operationalize facility master planning activities in partnership with facilities, construction teams, clinical leaders, and external vendors.Partner with finance and HR to ensure sound financial management, labor optimization, and workforce planning.

Additional Job Information:

Required Work Experience: Minimum of 10 years of progressive hospital operations leadership experience, including at least 5 years as COO or equivalent role in a large acute care hospital. Proven success in managing high-acuity service lines such as cardiac transplant program, surgical services, trauma and emergency services.
